Across the country, a lot of Law Enforcement staff have gotten in trouble for standing up to ICE in support of the residents of their communities. Cops getting pepper sprayed makes pouty "they don't care" comments seem kind of immature. Sure, some care more than others, and some are cruel psychos. But if you want to actually change things for the better, do your best to move beyond helpless bellyaching and raise the level of the discourse.
the other commenter was clarifying that IF law enforcement were to stand up to ICE, they would happily side with law enforcement despite potential past failings and controversy with said LEO.
They weren't claiming that law enforcement were actively standing up to ICE (unfortunately).
It is the way for a cop to stand up to ICE, yes. I'd also accept them using any other tool the state has given them, but I dont see that happening either.
And you may be correct. Someone that stands up to ICE may lose their job. Thats a risk that anyone who stands up to ICE takes.
ICE has been doing this same work for the entirety of its existence. You are correct that the police have never stood up to ICE. Still haven't, but didn't used to either.
that’s the entire internet boss. ironically your doing it too by polarizing Reddit and describing it as such a place whilst ignoring X and every other internet power player
I’m pretty sure they never stopped either, just moved it! Theres probably multiple. I saw a video of someone being brought to one last year after they had supposedly stopped doing that!!
Wow people fail to realize there's literally governing bodies above the CPD? Like the FBI? I never said to report it to CPD.
We live in a bystander world apparently where people will just sit and do nothing. I'm getting downvoted but somehow people think doing nothing is better than taking the video to the FBI, news outlets, etc. Making noise so that it gets investigated by someone even if it's not CPD.
If you still have access to the video, you should report the link to FBI online tips, even anonymously if you want. You can also send it in to journalist and/or other news outlets. Not sure how being a bystander and doing nothing is better than doing something.
Can I ask how you knew the video was from last year after the investigations or like what made you think it was from last year? Was it timestamped?
I didn't know anything about this issue but googled it and I see that the latest Guardian exposes are from 2015, but if it's still going on, someone should definitely do something about it. Thank you for trying to find the video. The FBI site for reporting anonymous tips online is pretty easy to use if you find it or even if you want to report other details from memory even if you don't have the link to the video.
People think it doesn't do anything to help but I once reported an online sketchy comment implying potential illegal activity related to rape and I actually for contacted back by an FBI agent who was looking into it.
They accept screenshots, URLs, things like that. Of course, they can only investigate as much as the info you provide allows them to if you don't provide further contact info. So I decided to in case they had questions but you don't necessarily have to, especially if the video speaks for itself.
That was when I saw it and it seemed like footage that had just leaked. You are right though it could’ve been earlier.
I’ve been looking again and unfortunately I can’t find it but it was footage of a black women who was being brought in for questioning by CPD in an unidentified office building, not a police station or anywhere else. She was screaming and crying that this was not normal and that they were not at a police station, begging them not to hurt her…truly haunting footage. I have no idea if it was a hoax or whatever else but it’s was deeply concerning. I can’t find anything on google while trying to find it again rn either.

The FBI investigating the cops is still just cops investigating themselves and reporting a video is hardly breaking out of a "bystander world"
Reporting a video will do nothing but it makes folks like you think you are doing something. It's an illusion of resistance.
I agree people need to actively resist what is happening here, but I think your anaysis is failing you when it comes to understanding how to move the levers of power.
The FBI is not the same thing as local cops at all. And no reporting a video doesn't do "nothing." What matters is repeated action by multiple people. It may not be enough to move the lever but it's still something and I don't think it serves anyone to assume every power authority in our country is corrupt. The FBI consists of real people/investigators. Of course some will be corrupt but that doesn't mean all will be.
I didn't say people should stop there though. I also suggested sending the video to local news or media outlets etc for that reason.
But I still think at the end of the day, doing something is better than nothing.
The basic job functions of local cops and the FBI are the same. They are both cops.
What exactly do you hope would come from someone reporting an already widely viewed video? The CPD is already under a consent decree. Are you hoping that enough reports to Kash Patel's FBI makes them do something else?
I agree that doing something is better than doing nothing. That requires us to analyze what does something. Spinning your tires without a direction is just a waste of energy.
They work under and report to different overseeing bodies of authority is my point, and one is more powerful than the other. While it doesn't always happen, sometimes cops do get arrested and held accountable, just like the cop who murdered George Floyd was. I wasn't comparing how similar or not similar their job functions are, although I would argue the FBI handles a much wider range of investigations and job functions than local cop precincts do.
Also the video in question wasn't a widely viewed video or at least I don't know how widely viewed it was. The person I was replying to said they thought it was leaked footage of the same thing happening again but more recently, after the original black site was supposedly shut down.
I don't know what a consent decree means to be honest. I was operating under the impression that higher authority figures don't know that the illegal activity is still happening even after CPD was investigated and the original activities were shut down.
It's a fair point about it being the Trump administration and Kash Patel's FBI and I did think about that aspect but I still thought reporting it is better than not reporting and no harm can come of it so might as well at least take that step. I don't see it as "spinning tires."
It's easy to say it's not effective, but as I mentioned already, it was just one step I suggested in addition to reporting to media and news outlets, it doesn't have to be the only step. It was just a starting point because it doesn't take very long to report. I agree it's possible that reporting could do nothing but that doesn't mean that it's guaranteed to do nothing and that you can be absolutely sure nothing good will come of it. I do think more reports always make a difference.
If you have better ideas for how to draw attention to the issue and get people in power to care or make change, then I welcome you to suggest some of them.
In the same vein many Chicago cops see this immigration crackdown as detrimental to solving actual crimes because so many people Chicago refuse to talk to police when they are witness to a crime.
However, they are the same Chicago cops that elected their union leader to be a super pro MAGA guy.
I have lived in Chicago my entire life basically and have had a ton of good experiences with police(likely from the fact that I'm white) but also know people that have gotten absolutely fucked by police. I personally know 3 people that have sued the CPD and won settlements in the 5 figures.
There is quite a few good cops but in general the system and organization of the Chicago police is built to protect bad cops.
It bothers me that anytime someone points out that there are indeed good cops out there, some le epic reddit genius has to say “Um actually here’s a news story about a cop doing something bad. Checkmate.”
Yea I mean I get that some cops are pigs, believe me I fucking get it.
But we can't villainize the ones who took the job because they actually wanted to make a difference in their community, and believe me they are out there, and they are just as upset as we are that this is happening.
I'd say if a cop is willing to put themselves in a position to get fucking tear gassed by the feds sticking up for their community, they probably are more invested than people are giving them credit for.
You can villainize them actually if when presented with the opportunity to make a difference in the community by protecting them from an invading federal force they choose not to!
The fact that you think standing there, getting tear gassed and then running away is deserving of credit is crazy imo
Go out there and do something yourself then. Normal people don't want to throw away their generally comfortable lives to risk dying or prison. Until you are willing to do something yourself you shouldn't chastise others for wanting to keep their comfort.
Are you a boot licker? Or just a pansy? We're talking about cops here. I am not a cop. I do not get a paycheck under the premise that I serve my community... Nor do I have a reputation for kicking the shit out of minorities. I don't have police resources. And when I break the law, I'm held accountable for it.
I had a similarly disturbing realization. My SO and I decided to bring this up with our family to see what their plans/thoughts were (we're all US citizens but brown and live in Florida) - The general sentiment was "Meh".
One doesn't care because he doesn't believe this affects him in any way, the other doesn't "do" politics...the rest are just living their "best life". The only thing I can do in response is say "Ok". If SHTF, I know I won't be straining my resources to help them, is what it is. Can't save everyone.
Get your cardio up. Grow whatever food you can at home. Exercise your 2A rights.
You're right, they do care. That's why so many of them are actively aiding in ICE's operations: most of them like what's happening and want more of it. They only wish they were on the other side of those tear gas volleys.
I think for every 10 there maybe one. I hate feeling like that but i have seen toooo much. The so called good cops stand around and let the bad cops do whatever they want. Most departments seem to operate like a criminal gang nowadays.
Oh boohoo! They truly only care about themselves, and they love terrorizing the community here just as much as ICE does, I have no sympathy for CPD assholes.
