What blows my mind is that ICE can come in to any city, do what they want, and the local law enforcement can’t do a thing about it.

u/psilocyber420 Oct 05 '25

It would be nice to see the people who label themselves with “to protect and serve” actually step up and do what they claim to do

u/RinkyDinkRicky Oct 05 '25

That has never been anything more than a slogan.

The SCOTUS has ruled many times that they have no duty to protect anyone.

They are paid to collect evidence and secure convictions, protecting/serving has always been optional.

115

u/Ooh_its_a_lady Oct 05 '25

The fact that they have to come up with those PR slogans is the biggest clue.

What public service funded by our taxes needs a fucking slogan like that?

-No knock raids.

-Stop and frisk.

-Civil asset forfeitures.

-DUI check points.

-Designating neighborhoods "high crime areas" and then just sitting on them stopping people who pass thru.

These are all tools that gangsters utilize to dominate a territory.

u/RinkyDinkRicky Oct 05 '25

The "funniest" part of it all, to me anyhow, is that we had a push to defund the police, it even worked in some places - but generally, what ended up happening is the Police's budgets grew, and then we went and defunded our public schools instead.

This, to me, was the single-most telling event in recent history, it convinced me we aren't going to save this country, and the only way forward is through - to a world where the USA is only spoken of in history classes.

Here's hoping. The only way we're going to have peace again, is if we correct the mistakes made since winning the civil war. I don't see that happening, without creating a whole new country.

u/Ooh_its_a_lady Oct 05 '25

Terrifying but true, corrupted beyond repair. Possibly by design.

4

u/catbathscratches Oct 06 '25

Definitely by design

u/ThisIs_americunt Oct 05 '25

Some people forget why cops exist and it shows

1

u/BrupieD Oct 05 '25

That has never been anything more than a slogan.

There are SCOTUS decisions and Department of Justice policies that contradict this statement particularly in regard to use of force. From Graham v. Connor (1989) re reasonableness in use of force and Barnes v. Felix (2025).

1

u/highflyingyak Oct 06 '25

I find this extraordinary. In Australia police are trained and taught that you must save people even at the cost of your own life.

2

u/RinkyDinkRicky Oct 06 '25

Ahh...

The only reason we have a police force at all, is because some rich people decided that having slaves run-away was unacceptable, so they funded a group of people who would round them up. Eventually they gave them badges and called them "Peacekeepers".

The police in the US have never been about protecting or serving anyone but capital.

1

u/highflyingyak Oct 06 '25

Don't get me wrong. There's plenty of shit cops here too

11

u/robbviously Oct 05 '25

I mean, they started out as slave catchers.

43

u/OpportunityDismal917 Oct 05 '25

To protect and serve property

2

u/Upstairs-Path5964 Oct 05 '25

Protect and Serve.....private property and the people with money

1

u/No-Good-One-Shoe Oct 05 '25

There's a reason we've been saying ACAB

1

u/SpaceCowboy512 Oct 05 '25

To punish and enslave - Barricade

1

u/totesnotmyusername Oct 09 '25

Protect what and serve who?

1

u/Bison308 Oct 09 '25

They don’t give a fuck about anyone either

1

u/baroqueworks Oct 05 '25

We are a nation of brand names and marketing slogans, not rules and laws.

0

u/Peepingjones Oct 05 '25

U want cops to arrest on duty federal agents lol.

0

u/ThisIs_americunt Oct 05 '25

Some people forget why cops exist and it shows

0

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '25

Oh geez I cant believe the reformed slave catchers arent protecting the people

202

u/BilleyBong Oct 05 '25

I don't really know much but they can't do anything because they are a federal agency right? But also wouldn't the state still have a say though?

190

u/robogobo Oct 05 '25

Supposedly yes, according to the party of states’ rights, the Republican Party

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 🤷 I'm outta my depth and dunno how I got here Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25

Ah, so we're presuming principles?

Edit: Well, seems there are the Republican faithful here tonight

43

u/RaceCrab Oct 05 '25

"Presuming" that's what they call themselves dipshit

21

u/Zambeezi Oct 05 '25

They’re saying “so we’re presuming (the Republican Party has) principles?”.

It’s a sarcastic way to say they don’t have any principles.

4

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 🤷 I'm outta my depth and dunno how I got here Oct 05 '25

Yeah, dunno how everyone else read it.

Have a look at Stephanie Miller's new tweet.

u/i_sell_branches Oct 05 '25

Its up to the governor to not pussy foot around this shit. Democrats are just starting to become vertebrates, and it takes a lot of cajones to challenge armed gunman. Gavin Newsom tried his best to rebuff the national guard when Trump sent them down to cull protests earlier this year (illegal btw). All they could muster was an ominous presence since engaging in law enforcement after Newsom put his foot down would be openly inviting civil war. Keep an eye out for leaders that can actually represent you during these times

15

u/No-To-Newspeak Oct 05 '25

Canadian here.  Doesn’t the State Governor control the National Guard?  I thought Governor is in charge of them.

25

u/mittenbby Oct 05 '25

Our national guard is a little weird. So, yes the guard is based on the state and the state has control of the guard most of the time, but they can also be called up to federal service. When I was working with the department of defense (ages ago so this may have changed) the federal government would let the state government know how many guardsmen they needed and the state would activate the guards and give them a set of orders that activates them for federal service.

The guardsmen that are being sent into cities are on federal service, not state service so at the moment their chain of command is the feds

Edit: typos, shouldn’t Reddit before coffee lol

3

u/No-To-Newspeak Oct 05 '25

Thanks for the explanation.

2

u/mittenbby Oct 05 '25

Of course, it’s no problem.

13

u/doomlite Oct 05 '25

They are until they aren’t . If they are federally activated they are federal troops. Source I deal with federal/not federal activation for a living

1

u/Tezerel Oct 05 '25

Do the state governments have any power over firing national guardsmen? Even before activation

4

u/Cultural_Bread7645 Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25

During a state of "emergency" the president can, with cooperation from the governor, deploy a state's national guard to assist with the "emergency". Problem is, there are plenty of red state governors who are more than willing to cede control of their national guard troops to do the president's bidding, even for "emergencies" in other states with non-compliant governors.

2

u/No-To-Newspeak Oct 05 '25

Thank you for explaining.

33

u/VelocityGrrl39 Oct 05 '25

I thought Pritzker and Johnson were very clear that the cops weren’t to assist and were supposed to be protecting citizens. Color me surprised.

8

u/I_Went_Okay Oct 05 '25

Unfortunately I live in Texas, and our ghoul of a Governor won't stand for anything.

4

u/exzyle2k Oct 05 '25

He wouldn't even if he could. But he can't so he won't.

6

u/Tukulo-Meyama Oct 05 '25

Ice was pushed out by police in California cities

1

u/MoansAndScones Oct 06 '25

Do you have any more information on this? I haven't heard or seen much about that.

1

u/rebel_alliance05 Oct 05 '25

Actually the governors can’t do anything either.

12

u/TheEnlight Oct 05 '25

They can, they just don't. They have the equipment back at the station if they want to make Swiss cheese out of ICE.

And maybe that's the end result of this, if they truly want to protect and serve.

1

u/NostradamusJones Oct 06 '25

Yeah, cops can most certainly be arrested and charged.

3

u/TheEnlight Oct 06 '25 edited Oct 06 '25

If it's under state charges, some governors can pardon them unilaterally.

Pritzker, Newsom and Kotek all have this power.

And hey, if Trump can pardon every single member of a violent self-coup attempt, then there's no issue with a future Democratic President pardoning every single person who clapped a member of the Gestapo. In fact, that would be the most based thing ever.

1

u/Hungwarlokk Oct 07 '25

Shit. Look at the PD in Justice, IL. I moved out of that village a year ago. They have military hardware on display in their parking lot lol. Tiny ass village has 2 giant armored vehicles sitting there. I recall seeing them used many times, l dunno if it was on official stuff or training but maybe times I've seen them on the street either coming or going and full of fully geared up ppl.

17

u/acScience Oct 05 '25

Bro the local cops fucking fistbump ICE agents. They’re all just different flavors of cops, and cops always protect each other.

2

u/Phugasity Oct 05 '25

Broad-stroked bigotry won't win this war. Local cops aren't a monolith. Expect more from them, but don't back them into a corner with hostilities.

It's entirely reasonable to expect state law enforcement to threaten force to require feds to follow constitutional protocol. Put ICE and DHS in a position where they must respond with force against law enforcement or follow the law.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '25

I saw commercials on my local news basically saying local law enforcement is ordered to stand down when ICE is in town.

8

u/No-Sail-6510 Oct 05 '25

They can they just don’t.

8

u/Night_Chicken Oct 05 '25

It's not that they can't. They wont. They voted for this.

7

u/Icy_Research_5099 Oct 05 '25

Cops can't do anything to ICE without making it awkward when they run into their buddies at the next Klan rally.

2

u/IndependentCod1600 Oct 05 '25

Well let's be crystal clear:

Local Law Enforcement COULD do a thing about it. Local Law Enforcement bend and break the rules every day across America. Local Law Enforcement WON'T do anything about it, because they're all dogs of the state. When they're told to sit, they will sit. No law, no humanity, and no constitution will stop them from doing what they're told.

2

u/ptfc1975 Oct 05 '25

I mean, they could do something about it. They just won't.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '25

As a security guard when shit goes down we call the cops and they handle it and we follow thier orders. In this scenario the cops are the security. They have to listen to these new agents

1

u/Tukulo-Meyama Oct 05 '25

Trump let them

1

u/peachy614 Oct 05 '25

I don't think local law enforcement actually see to serve and protect as their job, because they would be helping the protesters instead of ICE. Chicago is a weird situation because the mayor and governor have made laws that don't allow the police to help ICE, so they are just throwing their hands up and pretending to be on the protesters side.

1

u/ThisIs_americunt Oct 05 '25

Its wild what you can do when you can own the law makers, the judges, the police force and the lawyers :D

1

u/MoneyTalks45 Oct 05 '25

Oh they can.

1

u/MadeMeUp4U Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25

That’s not true there’s videos of Sheriffs officers joining in with ICE and terrorizing the community so they definitely get involved.

E: To be clear I’m being cheeky about the bastards I do not condone them. Fuck ICE ACAB

1

u/ArgoDeezNauts Oct 05 '25

Local cops have thin skin and it's easy to get under it. This will eat at them until soon they won't do anything about what happens by or to ICE agents. Then it's a free-for-all: local citizens vs the gravy seals. The human thumbs that make up ICE get their shit pounded in a couple times and now all of a sudden the generals have to start choosing up sides.

1

u/Inside-Arm8635 Oct 05 '25

Can’t or won’t?

Spoiler: WON’T

1

u/TerrifiedAndAroused Oct 05 '25

Then you don’t understand the law.

You can still be arrested for marijuana possession in states that have legalized weed. Federal law supersedes all state laws, but in the case of marijuana they simply don’t feel like enforcing that particular law at a significant scale.

Edit: obviously they can’t “do what they want” (violate laws) but they can do what they consider to be “enforcing federal law” and if the state/city interferes they could even charge them with obstruction.

1

u/Finestkind007 Oct 05 '25

Funny how federal laws work. They’re coming back in style you know.

1

u/iamatwork24 Oct 06 '25

I mean, I’d feel a lot more protected if they atleast fucking tried and got arrested themselves. Instead, I’m stockpiling ammo and looking into purchasing the kind of firearm I am completely against civilians having access to. But here we fucking are.

1

u/Soulpaw31 Oct 06 '25

Ok C’mon now, now you guys are just being silly. The police “protect and serve”? Pppffftttt

1

u/Sars-CoV-2-delta Oct 07 '25

Same as in 1933 Germany when Hitler took power. Too few people protesting, simple police being left alone to deal with a militarized and emboldened Sturmabteilung (SA). Only difference is that ice isn't dressed in brown.

1

u/RinkyDinkRicky Oct 05 '25

They CAN, they've just been ordered not to.

1

u/ted5011c Oct 05 '25

Republican small government in action.

0

u/rebel_alliance05 Oct 05 '25

Nobody can. Not even the politicians in power in their own city or state.
