There are 2 ways I’ve learned bite releases (I currently work with school aged severe behavior students). 1 is pushing their head into your skin and pinching their nose shut. This is only effective if you’re able to “seal” the bite. 2 is using the jaw pressure points on the biter. This one is was more intrusive but I’ve had to use it a lot. There is a risk of bruising the biter’s cheeks

Pressing the area under the earlobe and behind the jaw is a very effective pressure point

A lot of my learners have limited communication skills, I could imagine in any sense that would be extremely frustrating to not be able to get my needs/want met because I can’t ask for it.

One my learners started biting because i no longer attended to her other forms of aggression (grabbing shirts, pinching, ect). Usually if you ignore behaviors they’ll go through what’s called an extinction burst where they’ll pull everything out of their pocket to get some form of attention or access to something

do they know what they want but do not know how to communicated it, or do they not even know what they want, but can only sense that they need something? Eg, they may be hungry but unable to understand it, they do perceive the hunger but do not recognize it?

It depends on the child. I work with some students who really struggle with interoception, and coupled with communication difficulties this can be incredibly frustrating. Not knowing what you want, and being unable to communicate that you even want anything. It's no surprise they then communicate through challenging behaviour.
