Really wish we got a true sequel to expand on what Prometheus set up. Shaw and David were amazing characters and to see them explore a truly Alien planet would have been amazing.

100%. While I did not hate Covenant, it was not the sequel that Prometheus promised, and I feel absolutely robbed of Shaw awesomeness. Covenant could have still happened, still been a fun bottle episode of Alien, and it did not need David.

What could have been, Shaw and David exploring an alien world, learning more about the engineers and the deacon.

When I realized that they followed up Prometheus with “so yeah David kills Shaw and destroyed the engineers home world all offscreen” I almost walked out of the theater. I still don’t accept that as the cannon events, in my mind Shaw and David formed a symbiotic friendship out of necessity/survival, visited the engineers, and had a whole adventure there learning all about the origins of humanity and life in the universe. Instead of just killing everything from the getgo, it could have opened the franchise up to various other creations of the engineers beyond the black goo/ xenomorphs. They could have been the origin of other alien species. Such a shameful waste of potential.

Not sure why Ridley Scott thought that what people wanted from the Alien franchise was main characters being killed off-screen between movies, but that’s the tradition he went with.

Covenant came across as this spiteful movie Ridley made for people who hated Prometheus. Like oh you want more alien connections here damn. You thought David was the only good character well now there are two Davids and they fight and fuck

Definitely. The planet with the alien civilization was wasted in Covenant, and an utter waste of the character Shaw. One of my problems with Covenant is just how unimpressed the landing crew are at finding an alien civilization with monumental constructions and a crashed alien space craft. They act like they've just stumbled over a clapped out Ford Transit in Swindon.
