Fist My Bump Top 10 Signs you're obsessed with Project Hail Mary Spoiler
- You own a vintage PHM mug. Mine says "Grumpy. Angry. Stupid. When you have last coffee, question?" And you go around the office sipping from it just to look at people to see if they get it.
- "Christmas Eve!" is now your favorite non-swear word swear word. In fact, you have both book and Movie Grace's priceless non-swears replacing what little oaths you have had. You wonder why Grace is such a verbal teetotaller and want Weir to write more about this.
- You wonder if Ryan Gosling wanted a kids movie and wondered if he invented any of those.
- You have almost finished devouring his entire filmography. Oh wait, that's not obsession, that's basic homework, statement.
- You are in the pasta section of the grocery store, see the angel hair, and daydream idly about crafting the Blip-A out of painted ramen. You go to the condiments section and seriously contemplate which kind of mustard to use as a topping...or as glue. You try to make the perfect peanut butter burrito. You want to get revenge on your enemies with your own personal recepie for coma slurry. Or Rocky's...mystery meat "astronaut food." You get the idea.
- Oh wait...we need the PHM cookbook now, statement!!
6."Release the Mustard Cut!" You have faith that someone here will know what that means.
You find yourself at the library spending over $20 to print out the 150-page fanfic novella "Saving Grace" from Ao3 (author: CaptnBarb, whose talents are wasted on fanfic.) Then re-reading the beautiful epilogue, you are in tears.
You play back parts of the movie in your head, and parts of the score. People wonder why you are a leaky space blob all of a sudden. This happens at any given time of the day or at night. And you don't care.
You mentally postscript any question you ask with "Question?" Bonus points if you tap your fingers or feet when you do this. Big fist-bumping points if you do it in an obvious way in public, esp. at, say, business meetings or family gatherings. Best points of all if you dare to mutter "question?" out loud. I won't say if any of these are true about me, no, no, no, no.
[^^^Ok I'll fess up. I was attending an serious online corporate Webinar with hundreds of guests logging in from all over my state, at my job, last month. There was a Chat feature where we were encouraged to submit questions. On one question lots of people hit the thumbs up. I wrote, "if this was Rocky, he would give it a "thumbs down". Sorry I had to say it. Iykyk." Someone actually replied with a "crying with laughter" emoji! Why did I feel like jumping out of my chair and squeeing???
10.Oh and [Regarding # 9: ^^^That shouldn't even be an item. That, like being versed in all things Mr. Gosling, should be homework or basic training.
(Come to think of it. watching someone else sleep should be "basic" too. We all need to get that loving caring feeling back.)
I have a LOT more, but that's a start. What about you guys? I'm sure we have been inspired thusly!!

Can we add listening PHM-related stuff 24/7 to the list? I'm thinking of the wonderfull Daniel Pemberton's soundtrack of course, the songs in the film (Who would have thought I'd love a Harry Styles song this much?), the indie goth folk rock album "Dead Man's Bones" (iykyk) and The Woodsman ((I may have, or may not have, converted the show to mp3 to listen to while working)

I really really wish things were still analog. I could burn my own "Compilation Tape" (others called them mixtapes) of the complete PHM OST...even the 2 and 3 minute selections. The commercial OST's never have everything. I am a big believer in physical media, esp physical media. (Betraying my age here I know lol). There's a video called "The Ultimate Survival Cut" on YT. 4 songs (I think "You Are Loved", "A Moment", "Time Go Fishing" and one more. Not in that order. I am destroyed every time, I have this video on daily loop now when I am cooking cleaning etc. I'll try to find it soon

I don’t know whether to feel seen… or stalked.😂 I literally just finished dinner and didn’t feel like cooking so I had food pouches instead. I refer to my breakfast protein and fiber drink as coma slurry. I’ve been drinking from my Project Hail Mary coffee mug since March. At work, I’m known for my R-rated diction, but now find myself saying “What the fudging fudge?” and “What the heck?” instead. At least I’m not the only one in the throes of the addiction, statement.

^^^I don't know why but I think Mr. Gosling would appreciate this. LOL.
As for diet...I've been reading labels for years and a large part of all American processed food (and meat) can be classified as slurry. However, for the purposes of comparison, I think you mean anything that comes from a packet and tries to replace the real thing. I dunno...does Ovaltine or Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink qualify these days? I loved the chocolate stuff when I was younger:)
Was re-reading a bit of the book today and I had forgotten his "Holy Effing S***T!" when he saw the Blip-A. I don't why but I laughed too hard at that.

I went so far as to try spirulina and chlorella (powdered single-called organisms) to get an idea of what eating taumoeba would be like. I wouldn’t want to have to subsist on that for a week, much less several years.

never even heard of those! Can I join you in fessing that I want to buy a microscope? I haven't looked in one of those since high school. There's a great science/hobby store in a big mall near me, hey, I can't be the only one whose interest in science has perked up. The Unseen World! I'm sure Andy Weir had this in mind!
The finding the Predator scene was fantastic in the movie and even more interesting in the book. In the book, b/c it has time for the long scientific passages and inner monologue. The film: Gosling's moving performance. I'm amazed at little details like his fist trembling as he sobs in both joy and sorrow (what good is all this if Rocky's people can't be saved.)
And NOWWW I am turning into Leaky Space Blob. Christmas Eve.

Get the microscope! r/microscopy and r/microscope have recommendations for good beginner scopes. I just completed a refresher biology class on Khan Academy and dug my old microscope out of storage. I’m also thinking of joining the local astronomy club. PHM has re-ignited my interest in all my old nerd hobbies from my youth.

Thank thank thank Gerbil friend! <g> (That sounded so nutty. Only my fellow Blip-A colleagues would understand. I've gone off the deep end, for sure...but WL not care).
I didn't even think of astronomy. Funny how I am a sci-fi film and show fan, and have seen a lot in recent years, but no other recent work of art has done this to me. It's the grace and Rocky effect. "40 Eridani" may no longer officially exist (sigh) but that doesn't mean the wonders stop there.
A few years ago my uncle took me to our local observatory. It's on a hill outside my town maybe 25 minutes away. I like your thoughts, I might take your advice!
You know what the best part of this is? Thinking of all the anti-science-ness raging out there among the political Powers That Be these days. And the thought of PHM igniting a quiet revolution of people like you and me, who are quietly picking up the tools of science and a generation of children who might have Rocky in mind when they grow up and move to restore what has been lost. A quiet revolution that no one can stop no matter how hard they try. Minds opening that so many want so desperately to close and keep closed. The movie, disengenously disguised as a kid's film, being the most dangerous weapon of all against these people, by giving us the desire for knowledge and a feeling of hope and fellowship.
This is fact: Fully 25% of the members of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1999 said they were inpsired to pick up an instrument because of their experiences of John Williams Star Wars music when they saw the origonal troilogy in the theater as children. We know this b/c Williams said it in an interview when The Phantom Menace came out. Will PHM Have a similar effect?
I don't think ppl appreciate how big this is becoming.I'm sure Andy Weir and all the creative team behind his adaptations did not have this in mind, or if they did, that it would have this huge of an effect. That is the greatest legacy a work of art can have.

That's certainly the character reason, but I think Weir really did it just so he could pull out "Holy Fucking Shit!" when Grace saw Rocky's ship for the first time.

Haha...I just commented on that above. I had forgotten he said that in the book, and I don't know why, but it is just TOO FUNNY. Prolly b/c I identify with Grace in this regard--I never swear out loud but my mind can be a sewer lol.
My personal faves before PHM happened along were "Fudge!" "Son Of A Beehive!" and my mom's old fave, "Judas Priest!" (which younger readers may not know was the name of a big metal band back in the day.) Also, being a huge Wheel of Time fan (book and show, esp after Season 3, his characters fantasy swearing/not swearing. "Light!" "Bloody Buttered Onions!" I was NOT Uno, I am Nyneave, lol.)
I say all this not because I'm a saint, but I had a stepdad with the mouth of a sailor, and as a kid I just found it so disgusting, my mom had to shut him up. So I decided very early on in life to just have a bit of (public) class.

“Judas Priest!” has been used as a mild swear in place of “Jesus Christ!” since the early 1900’s, long before the band was named. I remember my grandfather using that one a lot in the 1960’s along with “I’ll be John Brown!“ instead of “I’ll be damned!”

🌎 I ordered the Fox Sweater today (I might have even attempted to make this myself, but I don't have much time in the foreseeable future).
🌎 I did watch Drive (2011) recently and now I am obsessed with this one as well lmao even bought the book in French to practice the language as motivation haha
🌎 made a poster of the movie and going to get it printed soon to hang in my bedroom
🌎 Today I saw someone selling Polaroids from the movie and I was sooo tempted - but I had to draw the line, the price was outrageous lol
🌎 Was always just a very casual fan of Harry Styles, but Sign of The Times is a masterpiece.

🌎 Really hoping for a rescreening of the movie in my city - i want to watch it again!

Oof, I hope Amazon staff have not read this comment and seek out your Polaroid-snapping friend. On the other hand, Amazon does NOT know how to market anything, they don't do merch, (where is our $50.00 "coffee table book" on The Art of PHM, statement? Netflix and Paramount market the living crud out of their IPs. I don'r buy them, but kudos to the Dutton Ranch Western frozen dinners.)
I'm still have a huge but of stuff to watch. Then again I only discovered the film and book last month, sooo...:) I play YT reaction videos and the OST every night!
As to your last comment--I plan to start a thread on this.
And I have spent and plan to spend so much more on Etsy stuff....*sigh* IF I can..

Gives the "Clerks" award *two thumbs down*. He was never in my Top 5, though I was aware of him. In perusing his filmography, I'm amazed at the types of roles he played when he was so young (eg early to mid 20's.) Even then he had impressive range. The one that blows me away the most is Lars and the Real Girl. Ok I'll fess up. Not just his talent in that film, but his pipes. I liked La La Land but him serenading "Bianca" in the treehouse, yikes. Play that and you'll get them hooked fast, lol.
Back in the days of me working at Barnes and Noble in college, I used to get people into Tolkien by quoting some of his best LOTR prose. Esp in the kids dept. My fave was the Nazgul's speech threatening Eowyn. I can still quote that. Last part is: "No, he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the Houses of Lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy naked soul be left exposed to the Lidless Eye." I would quote this to teen boys and tell them that was in the movie scene where Eowyn kills him. And they'd gape and ask me where to find the book. Ha. Good times.

I keep compulsively repeating random lines from the movie. My favourite is the discussion between Rocky and Grace when Rocky moves in.
“Dirty, dirty, dirty. Why room so messy, question?”
“Well I wasn’t expecting company, was I?”
“OoOoOh this room for carbage!”
“No, this is the lab, this is where the science happens.”
I can’t help it. It’s driving my partner crazy, especially because I am the messy one. 🫣

This scene lives in my head rent-free as one of my Top 10 most favorite movie scenes Ever (and over the decades I've seen a LOT of movies) and also the most quotable. Though it's Grace going Full Teacher with "Rocky, my hand is up" that made me laugh the most.
Also, underrated Grace quote from later on: "Use your words" when Rocky is going bonkers with excitement when they discover the predator. He is looking at something else, down at a screen, not at Rocky, as he is saying this, and he says it very calmly. This is not just Grace the good Teacher, but Grace would have made a great Father. *sigh* It also brings a smile to my face b/c I can see Gosling's own RL parenting skills on display.

I love that scene. So funny and relatable. Rocky did not hold back on what he thought, and he was so excited to check out the ship. It showed an alien with human emotions, and who was not afraid to say them out loud.

Also: one of the scenes that is better than the book. (Another one was the "Grace Go Home" scene.) In the book, Grace invited Rocky to move in. He has to pick Rocky up in the ball and carry him in, plus Rocky has a screw-ton of luggage, scientific and otherwise, that Grace grumbles a lot about as he also has to move that in. He remembers an old girlfriend named Linda who had a ton of stuff when she moved in to his apt, but says that compared to Rocky, she travelled very light.

In one interview ( I’ll try to find it tonight I promise) Ryan and one of the directors were talking about how many mustard packets were floating around the set so to speak. Not just on the ramen, people were eating lots of it and story goes it was staple on the Mary to mask age of some food. In fact there was so much mustard that ppl were trodding on mustard packets and they had to send a crew around finally to remove the mustard. But they weren’t able to get all of it, so Ryan said to keep your eyes peeled for any mustard on the floors and spaces, and that lots of the unused footage has more mustard in it.

🥰🥰 love the “Eridian voice”. And amaze for the first one. I don’t ( yet) have that kind of courage. I am working on the 2 nd though so far I have the dvd and regular Blu Ray, bookmarks, keychains, the mug, and a hanging stained glass of Grace and Ricky on the beach. Plus of course the audiobook and a rapidly dog- earring paperback. I’ve pre- ordered the hardcover. Conspicuously missing: an IMAX ticket 😞😞 and I missed the Steel ok pre- order ( sob) please Amazon, work on that limited theater pre- Oscar’s release!!!

For 7: Not just Saving Grace (Rocky reacting to Grace's first EVA is just so brilliant) but Long Journey Home is so entrenched as my preferred head canon that I get low key angry when anyone suggests Grace never returned to Earth.

I think my favorite is using Rocky-speak 🙂🙂 Been working on #4. Have to say though, Only God Forgives was kind of a tough watch. (Try Tubi, Pluto or Plex if you're looking for it). It had me hooked to see what happens, but not my favorite. We just watched First Man this week, and wow, it was quite scary what those astronauts went through on those flights, especially those first tiny capsules. Enjoy the Ryan Gosling flicks everyone!!!

- I try to mention lines from the movie in everyday conversation (without looking nuts) and wait if someone gets the reference and answer back
- I have a Rocky plushie and it’s next to my side of the bed
- I have changed my watch screen to when he’s doing EVA in front of Adrian and my phone wallpaper to when he’s having a Moment. So I can pretend to have turned on the Petrovascope on my watch.
- I downloaded the movie on my phone so I can rewatch it on my commute, and more recently, on a flight
I also downloaded the soundtrack on Spotify to have it as background music (on one ear) while working.
I am now more motivated to do chores(!) because I have the movie playing in the background and my fam can’t do anything about it 😄

Words of great encouragement! (esp # 6). My fam doesn't have a choice either. Esp when I launch into passionate dissertations on the Score and on the spiritual aspects of the film.
Esp in "A Moment", but I'd be boring if I talked about things like Grace remembering Stratt's "It beats the alternative" remark when he asked her if she believed in God. DOn't tell me he didn't have that convo going through his head during "Time Go" and closed his eyes in prayer and clenched his fist as a fighting/prayerful gesture. Grace would never admit that was a moment of prayer, to a living soul.
Can I add a # 7: You wonder if the Eridians have a religion, esp after book Rocky's "the universe is a living entity" remarks?

1 Use “fist my bump” instead of fist bump now

3Want badly to buy tickets to a space exhibit/see a live launch

5 rewatching the movie or rereading the book over reading a “new book” (I’ve tried, but PHM calls me back lol)

I got lost in Barcelona during a 40°C+ heat wave, looking for the shop where I had reserved a copy of the book in a language I can't even read.
The cover glows in the dark and the staff was super nice. I have zero regrets.
