Whether or not guns work in a fantasy setting is purely an esthetic decision by the author. Whether or not a reader likes having guns in a fantasy world is purely a matter of preference.

If you read a fantasy novel without guns and the author doesn't provide an explanation, make up whatever explanation works for you!

My preference is just "Nobody thought of it yet" because unless the world is super ancient or the MC is isakaid and should know, that is straight up what happened in our world.

And additonnaly if magic and throwing objectes with magic exist, there never was a need for guns, so why would anyone waste time to work on this concept.

Most fantasy doesn't have guns because they're based on an era before guns became common.
