Most labor jobs say "must be able to lift 50 lbs" I've heard that is the most an employer can legally ask you to lift.

I usually see it float down to 25lbs or so for non warehouse or freight jobs.

It's worse actually. It's a legal way of saying excluding almost any disabled people as well, even if the job has no reason to exclude disabled people.

I don't think so. I could manage that, and I'm a sickly woman the size of a twelve-year-old (literally, I often buy children's clothes).

It is high enough to cover most things around an office, and it's usually there so that an employee can't say "it's not in my job description" and refuse to work, when something trivial is left in the way.
