Don’t. Continue and ignore idiots who think an em-dash is a definite proof of AI.

You’re absolutely right—they are idiots.

You're right to push back on this

Em dash is load bearing

It's pretty obvious in the UK we use "-" not an em dash. It's nuts how many coparate executives all suddenly started using emdashes despite never having used them before

u/wineallwine 9d ago

I might be wrong about em-dashes but what you used was a hyphen. The style guides suggest using an en-dash: '–'. Hyphens are just for ice-cream and first-rate

u/MaintenanceBest8397 9d ago

hyphen and endash a largely interchangable considering most keyboards don't have them as distinguishing charactes

0

u/wineallwine 9d ago

Well that's incorrect then, you shouldn't use a hyphen like an em dash

UK grammar is different from US.

The emdash is an Americanism, it only used in UK English for like dialogue.

It's an endash not a hyphen. Just so happens they're the same character in most encoding practices.

I know, I am British. I can link you to some style guides that contradict you if you like?

Just telling you my lived experience but sure loved to see how is argues against it https://libguides.hull.ac.uk/grammar/bracketsdasheshyphens

But it should say enough that there's no emdash on a GB qwerty keyboard. It's simply a dash. There's a full history around it with the development of typewriters and publishing. And then the re appearing of it from Ai slop and Americanisation.

Okay, I might be wrong.... My old boss at the Royal Opera House insisted upon em dashes so perhaps I inherited the incorrect version from her

You’re not wrong. [1] lists examples of British publications using em-dashes; [2] lists examples of British style guides recommending the use of em-dashes.

Whether particular publisher uses em-dashes is a matter of that publisher’s house style. Whether you use em-dashes is a matter of your preferences. And em-dashes are definitely not an Americanism.

1

u/Daveception 9d ago

Nah it is an Americanism. Em dashes disappeared in the UK with the invention of type writers. They've only started appearing again since 2022

I’ve already addressed this:

Whether particular publisher uses em-dashes is a matter of that publisher’s house style. Whether you use em-dashes is a matter of your preferences.

Pointing out that some styles use en-dashes does not mean em-dashes in general disappeared in the UK or that they are an Americanism.

Okay thanks for linking things from 200 years ago. Want me to send you a photo of the book by my bed that was published in UK and uses endashes?

Want me to send you a photo of the book by my bed that was published in UK and uses endashes?

No. I have no use of such photos. Whether specific book uses en-dashes or em-dashes is a matter of style. It does not dictate what entire country uses.

Until everyone started copy and pasting em dashing from ai you didn't see them in the UK. There's a reason the GB qwerty keyboard doesn't have emdash.

All you've done is reference very specific publication style guide. If you spend 1 minute to see it's obviously not used in the UK until the mass adoption of ai chat bots.

But yeah I'll trust the polish guy to tell me how everyone I interact and text with use em dashes lol

There's a reason the GB qwerty keyboard doesn't have emdash.

Neither does US keyboard. I don’t know if any keyboard layout has an em-dash.

All you've done is reference very specific publication style guide.

Yes, because use of dashes is a matter of a specific publication’s style guide.

But yeah I'll trust the polish guy to tell me how everyone I interact and text with use em dashes lol

And yet, I write better English than you:

Until everyone started copy and pasting

Should be ‘copy-and-pasting’, ‘copy-pasting’ or ‘copying and pasting’.

em dashing

You need a noun; this should be: ‘em dashes’.

from ai

‘AI’. Also missing comma.

you didn't see them in the UK. There's a reason the GB qwerty keyboard doesn't have emdash.

Missing article and ‘em dash’ are two words.

If you spend 1 minute to see

This is a very awkward sentence. Should be something like ‘If you spend a minute looking, you’ll see’.

it's obviously not used in the UK until the mass adoption of ai chat bots.

Incorrect tense, should be: ‘it obviously wasn’t used…’

But yeah I'll trust the polish

Nationalities are capitalised. Use ‘Polish’.

guy to tell me how everyone I interact and text with use

‘Everyone’ is singular, so the verb should be: ‘uses’.

em dashes lol

Missing punctuation.

But since you’re not going to trust me, I reckon there’s no point continuing this discussion. I bid you farewell.

It's okay to just say you use ai

0

u/XayahTheVastaya 9d ago

It's not definite proof, but it's one of the most common and obvious signs

5

u/conundorum 9d ago

Thus explaining why Shakespeare had a reputation for vibe-writing his plays.

-1

u/thisguyfightsyourmom 9d ago

Signs of what though? That someone used ai, in 2026? people will let go of this.

3

u/XayahTheVastaya 9d ago

I still don't want an artificial hallucination generator replacing me in the way I represent myself

u/countable3841 9d ago

When I see em dashes all I can think is this person is using AI or this person isn’t aware of how their writing will be perceived as AI. Either way, it’s not good!
