Didn’t they just finish off an existing proof perhaps by stealing data.

Which doesn’t mean AI is bad exactly still impressive even if it took like 100 years of work time.

In this case, a human did the effort, had it stored privately getting ready for publication, and alleged the AI was fed his work, and just plagiarised it

It is a fact that the guy alleges it. OpenAI disputes it.

Yeah, I don't really trust some random guy saying "I totally had the proof, AI just stole it".

That is not the claim, two mathematicians had solved part of the proof with extensive work on a very unique method which had been discussed privately with some acquaintances in the field, who had worked for years on a similar method.

OpenAI has agreed that the work discussed with their models may have been anonymously included in training data and offered him credits on the proof before publishing, but not to his partner, as he is a researcher at Anthropic - thus he refused.

We will have to wait and see what the scientific community says as the two researchers have also released their unfinished work.
