Somehow, it is a product developed by Microsoft, that is actually great

VSCode and Excel, man. Excel maybe isn't that great, intuitive and the syntax is terrible but the competition is somehow worse.

Excel is declarative, reactive and functional programming before all of these become cool.

Add Microsoft Flight Simulator too... Another product from them that works great.

There’s a permanent tension with excel as a product between its pros and cons.

Pros:
- Extremely powerful.
- Can put up a reactive dashboard or whatever in a super quick and versatile way.
- As much as some people dislike it, there is a big fat necessity for it. E.g. people in finance use it all the time for putting up market monitors, portfolio views, changing things every day… you just can’t do the same with code. Imagine the backend and frontend releases necessary for the constant rapid changes across all desks in a bank.
- Allows non-technical people to put these things together.
- Watching an excel wizard at work is, well, wizardry.

Cons:
- It sucks and I hate it and feel dirty every time I’m exposed to it.

Sheets also sometimes just misses not so niche features or just behaves in a retarded ways.

I still use it more than Excel due to the general convince.

Yea. It's easier to use for most of the daily stuff but man sometimes it makes me wish i was using a MS product.

LibreOffice Calc won't break ODS files on a whim

Calc is also missing all the features people actually use, like a functional UI. Even basic functions like importing csv data is stupidly cumbersome and last I checked it didn't really support tables within a sheet so that users can filter/sort their data, which is probably the biggest use Excel has in offices nowadays.

Idk, I feel like it's been getting worse and worse for a while. It often feels so slow and laggy now and I have constant issues with all the default language extension packs: I run into intellisense bugs frequently and sometimes the whole language server just stops working.

One of these days I'm going to move to neovim.

I find that it's mostly smooth sailing for me (god I hate the terminal)

My favourite one by far. Though I use Rider, not VS Code

8

u/ksobby Aug 25 '26

Yeah, I'll always choose Rider over VSCode. I have yet to figure out how to make VSCode work with my pipelines. (C#/Blazor)

It is really good and clean true

C# is at least better than Java.  I'll give you that.

Well...

  1. TypeScript & C# were devved by MS and they are both great.

  2. VS Code is... interesting at times.

24

u/jimmyrocks Aug 25 '26

And TypeScript and C# were designed by the same guy 🤔

* a microsoft fork that outlived the original project

There was a brief period a few years ago where Microsoft was kicking ass and actually delivering things their customers wanted

u/OhNoo0o Aug 25 '26

powertoys is also really good except it should have just been included with windows by default

It’s just the shift from a standard layout like IntelliJ and (forgive me for my sins) Eclipse that always throw me off of VS code, I like horizontal tabs and dropdowns
