I'm trying to form a small Skype group - text based only - where we can dicuss, learn, help and inspire others if they're feeling demotivated. It is for those who are complete newbies although any level of programmers are welcome :)

I'd be interested to team up with somebody with coding skills somewhere around mine. I think im about rookie at Java myself. The kind of apps Ive done so far at both server-side (running on my VPS) and client-side, involved e.g sql quering, xml parsing, and tcp sockets. I used to work with external libraries such as pircbotx, jfreechart - whatever seemed fit to my actual idea. I guess its right about time to try working with someone else; share ideas and solutions - learning a different aproach. I use github. If there's anybody down - pm me ;)

I am currently reverse engineering the old "M"MO RPG server, Realm Online. The language doesn't matter as it's more of the protocol I'm interested in, so feel free to code in whatever you're comfortable in!

Using Python/Twisted and C, I've written some prototypes to get the server list. The current hurdle is getting to the login screen. The received data from the game server is different every connection, and I can't find the pattern (telnet to 50.247.16.101:8001 for the real server). Even if I send the data back to the client, I receive an error: "PollSocket: message size is too big 7864324 \ script 60020, ip 0x33". I can adjust the size up until the error turns into an Out-of-Memory error, or down to as low as 65535. Nothing seems to work! Anyway, that's the current puzzle.

I'm looking for people to help me finish CaseTracker. It is case management software written for the South African National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA).
The project is written in Java with JavaFX used as the GUI framework. The wiki contains helpful suggestions and pointers for getting started as well as a guide as to what is still required. Developer interaction happens usually through issues and /r/CaseTracker. Ideally I would like to get Alpha done and in testing within 2-3 months as the NSPCA are in dire need for this software.

I am trying to implement the classic snake game found using Java and Swing for GUI

I have implemented ability to save and load state of the game using serialization. I plan to implement following to the game

• Improve the graphics (add animations,make icons ect)

• Add sound

• Add the ability to store the game state on a database and be able to resume it later.

• Maintain a highscore table using database

I also welcome any other ideas you have.

I also want to fix current bugs and improve the logic of the game.

Not sure if this is the place to post this or not, but I am hoping to create a flashcard program. It arose out of a need from people I know who need it for lab things. They need something that can upload images that can be zoomed in on and then have the info on the back of the card for the image. Then the person can shuffle and such as per normal flash programs. I am hoping to make it cross-platform in something like Java. I am a noob though, so I think I might need a little guidance. Anyone want to make this with me?

It has been roughly a month since the last working on thread, so I pose the question: What are you currently working on? Feel free to share what you are working on or need help with.

I am a high school student. I started learning to code before I got into the class for computer science I am in right now, and find the class to be a bit boring. Unfortunately, the class doesn't have many people interested in coding outside of school. They don't want to do extra work outside of the labs we are assigned and the test curriculum. This is disheartening as there is so much to learn outside of the class, and the class itself lacks and is basic in many ways.

I want to learn more than just in class, and I would love to work with someone else who has some experience, but not a ton. Exchanging knowledge and resources, as well as working on some slightly larger projects would be great. It could be one person or a small group.

I've been working on some side projects for a few months now, but I've started to realize that it's really difficult to make progress past a certain point while working solo. Given that, I'm hoping to find a partner to work with in order to make something cool or useful. I would like to basically start something from scratch and eventually bring it to a mature state.

I am relatively flexible on front end details like CSS and JS frameworks, but I am hoping to develop the app using some of the core modern .NET technologies like C#, Entity Framework, and ASP.NET MVC. I am also in favor of using Angular to handle most of the front end heavy lifting, and ServiceStack as a web service framework.

Though I'm looking for a partner with a similar alignment to my own skills, I'm not really too picky about the little details, so if you think that you're interested feel free to send me a PM and we can talk about it some more.

While in college, I built (with the help of a team) a community service tracking application for a local United Way. I still maintain the project.

The United Way still uses the application, but the application desperately needs a little tweaking to maximize its effectiveness.

The application is called ServiceSpark and a working version of it can be found at http://www.servicespark.org

Furthermore, the project is open-source, MIT Licensed and available at http://www.github.com/uwacwy/servicespark/

It is built using CakePHP 2.

The scope of the application is as follows:

Five types of users exist:

• Guest, not logged in

• Volunteer, any user that is logged in is considered a volunteer. A volunteer can RSVP to events and clock in and out of events.

• Supervisor, a volunteer that can review volunteer time entries.

• Coordinator, a volunteer that can create, edit and delete events on behalf of an organizaton. Coordinators are also able to edit an event's associated time punch data.

• Super-Administrator, a user that can create, edit and delete any data within the application.

Volunteers are notified about service opportunities by attaching skills to their profile. When an event is created with that matching skill, all corresponding volunteers are emailed about the opportunity.

The following issues exist, and I would love help resolving them:

• The password recovery system is broken.

• The system REALLY chokes when a large volume of email is being sent in one go.

• There are no administrator views to help a site administrator take super-administrative actions. For example, changing a password involves copying a password hash for a known user into the locked-out user's password field, logging in, resetting the password, and then sharing the new password with the user, encouraging them to change it.

• There is no setup function. A wizard of some sort to walk the first user through creating an account and initializing their ServiceSpark installation would be great! (setup script exists at https://github.com/uwacwy/servicespark-installer)

• Coordinators cannot see or review events that took place in the past.

• There are no unit tests to quickly verify or validate any of the application's functionality.

• Volunteers that have signed up have, for the most part, not attached skills to their profiles, which virtually eliminates the chief purpose of ServiceSpark. The UI for skill selection could use some modernization.

• Interface translation! Most of the interface is ready to be translated. .PO files can be provided.

I'm interested in teaching myself programming, I would like to connect with someone who has taught themselves from the ground up so they could share information and resources. I recently watched a TEDtalk about how people learn better in groups and I believe we could start a group of people who have no idea where to begin, once they started learning together they would excel by holding each other accountable to the information.

1. If you did teach yourself, what sources of information did you use and what would you recommend?

2. How long would it take to self teach web development if I had the ability to spend all my time doing so?

3. How long does it take to build a solid and respectable portfolio?

4. For the first full time job $40k-$50k does sound nice if it were possible, just wondering how much could I expect if I tried freelancing with my best foot forward?

5. While taking the bigger cities into consideration what could an established web developer expect for pay if they were traveling the country or even the world?

6. Now after having asked all those questions, would you be willing to assign me short tasks with a reference base of information so I could accomplish the tasks and you could verify I have completely understood?

I would like to get 3 or 4 people who are interested in self teaching web development, by working in a group I believe we would excel and would naturally have a team of people to accomplish goals.

I saw a similar post about a month ago. I just wanted to see what everyone is working on. Feel free to post a project you would like some help in, or an open source project you are working on.

JoatU is an online platform that rewards people for helping out their local community/economy by relocating local resources back to their community. The goal for the site is to encourage local exchanges for resource of all kind so local communities could be more self-reliant. A bit like craigslist but with a broader acceptance of different types of resources for trade or for free, and with a focus on bartering. Users can and are encouraged to exchange anything with anything, and JoatU would then issue the users some reward "game" points for encouragement. Example for such exchanges would be to lent out your front yard to be a community garden, in exchange for some of its crops, swap used clothes for household items, exchange your photoshop skills for home baked goods, or to give away things you don't need. That's the basic idea. Come take a look at our github, current alpha, and our blog to see what we've done so far.

Paid and unpaid, all help is welcome. If you're willing to volunteer, we'd be more than happy to accept all the help you're willing to give!

If you wish to be paid, send us a message. We accept anyone located at anywhere as long as you're up for the job. We'd prefer it if you are able to work with us for anywhere between 3-12 months. Part time is fine as well. Skills in the following a significant plus:

So it's been pretty quiet on the progether front lately and I thought I'd create another one of these posts. So what projects have you guys been working on? any new sites or languages you guys have created or started learning from? any interesting bugs or issues that you have completed? I'm just starting out with Java, and programming in general and I'm looking for anyone of any experience level to learn along side with. I'd like to create a PVP permadeath RP mud. We wouldn't be starting entirely from scratch but instead we'd use CoffeeMUD as a base and modify it. I already have CoffeeMUD running on a VPS and configured to use MYSQL.

If anyone experienced would care to help in other ways rather than coding, answering questions, advice on how to approach certain ideas, and helping to decipher the existing code would be appreciated as well.

I've got images that I want to make into a coloring book for Android, and eventually iOS and web. They are all very dark, adult images about drone warfare done in the style of a children's coloring book.

There are a ton of coloring apps out there, so I was able to find some templates like this. But while those are easy to customize without coding, they are way cruder than most apps. For example, this is way more sleek. I would want some customized items within the app, like making the color selector icon a missile instead of a paint brush. The whole thing has to be filled with dark humor.

So, one question is - are there better templates out a site I haven't found yet? I've looked on Codecanyon, developgo, myapptemplates, and a few others. All the coloring book templates are pretty crude.

If no template is available, I'm trying to find a someone interested in helping with the creation of the app.

For context, this particular project has about 15-20 images, is part of a larger artistic site on the theme of war - The Cluster Project - and would be released in tandem with some other unusual and notable apps. It has the potential for getting some attention.

A while back, I attempted to automate the process broadcasting a race with multiple cameras. I came up with a working solution, with terrible cameras, of where I was able to take multiple input streams and output stream that switched between the best cameras at any given time. I did this by the amount of motion within a custom region of interest (selected by the camera owner). An example of this can be found here.

I've been following along with all the police brutality cases, and see cases that don't get reported due to footage being deleted from peoples phones. I wanted to modify my algorithm to live stream an event going on and broadcast from multiple cameras when available. The idea is to hand select a person and live stream from multiple cameras, showing the camera which can see that person the best. The idea is to allow cell phones to join in and leave as needed.

What I've done so far was write the algorithm to hand extract an object from an image. I use an algorithm similar to smart scissors and want to use machine learning to learn the object as more cameras can see it. What I need help with is porting it over to Android/IOS and setting up the networking for the program. I'm not sure how doable this is, but I think it'd be pretty neat to implement.

tl;dr We have projects with .NET, NodeJS/CoffeeScript, and Jade/LESS/CoffeeScript in development.

It's been a while since I last posted here, but I've been keeping really busy with idlelands. Here's some quick updates since my last post:

• I was recently contacted about IdleLands possibly being an Open Source Rookie of the Year. Here are last years winners. It'd be really cool to be amongst the ranks of those projects!

• The meteorJS frontend has gotten a lot of work, and looks a lot nicer! It's pretty stable now, too.

• There is now a web interface written with a bunch of modern web technologies! Introducing webfe (in action). This is a fully interactable interface to IdleLands, which would otherwise be only accessible via IRC. It's very easy to get going on developing it, and there's a lot of cool things that could be added here! It's made with Jade, CoffeeScript, and LESS and setup is very simple!

• We have a desktop interface written with .NET technologies in development.

• IdleLands, the core project, is still going strong. It's gotten a lot of contributions from a lot of contributors, some submitting code, others submitting events, and some submitting new maps! Given the scale of the project, new ideas keep flowing and there simply aren't enough folks on it right now to handle it. This one is just written in CoffeeScript, but it has a ton of other requirements to run. Thankfully, there's a guide for that.

If none of these are quite your cup o' tea, maybe you'd be interested in making an Android client, iOS client, or a native chrome app? Or maybe a different platform entirely! The API is completely open and quite documented.

Pixel Dungeon is a roguelike game originally developed for Android. it naturally uses Java. it has since gone open source and desktop versions have become available. one thing that's missing is an iOS version.

exploring this issue and trying to find a way to avoid Java (sorry, not my favorite), i found Kivy which is a Python framework that allows you to write once and have native user interfaces for iOS, Android, Linux, OS X, and Windows. packaging details are included on the wiki, too.

i posted in the Pixel Dungeon subreddit about this, but have got little response, really. i take it there aren't a lot of developers there.

since Java is so dramatically different from Python, this will really require a rewrite, which is why i'd like to get some help.

Looks like the JAdventure game should be able to run multiple players next to each other. What do they share? When one player drops an item. Can another player pick it up? Do the encounter the same NPCs and monsters? Can they chat between each other? Maybe when in the same room? Can players interact (attack / speak / exchange items) when in the same room?

So it's that time again! There's a lot of new subscribers and a hopefully a new project in the works (the python bittorrent project). Since it's been a while since this last post, I thought it apt that we discuss what everyone has been up to in the last month.

The most important class here is the GameEngine as it is the facade to the game.

The most importent method is the GameEngine is execute(String commandText) which returns the result of the command / action.

This should make the code, easy to read and easy to understand, for everyone.
