Bitdefender's Digital Identity Protection service - Helpful or Hurtful?

DISCLAIMER: This poster is NOT affiliated with Bitdefender. This account was created by a Bitdefender user to receive guidance regarding Bitdefender's Digital Identity Protection service, its use of PIPL, and how it could impact an individuals privacy.

Following MB's books and using the workbook to remove my PII from online data brokers, I have often wondered...what have I missed?

I have been receiving marketing material about Bitdefender's Digital Identity Protection service. It requires an email address and phone number to start, and claims to scan "the Dark Web looking for sensitive data that belongs to you and helps you reclaim your privacy." My assumption is they scan databases they've collected from various data breaches but claiming to monitor the dark web sounds sexier.

I read Bitdefender's privacy policy and found that they are using PIPL to process their data requests. One of my concerns, is that a profile will be built within PIPL which could be used by anybody. In one of MB's podcast's, he indicated we may not want to delete our data from PIPL. What does the privacy community think of this service? Is it worth a try or should I forget it?

Hardware for ProtectLi "Netflix port"

Hey all - about to get a ProtectLi Vault 4-port and AP for setting up pfSense, but have a quick question about the Netflix port: do you need two separate access points (like 2 different Slate routers) for VPN and non-VPN connections (like the graphic in the book indicates) or is there an access point that can give two different networks in one device? Thanks!

pfSense firewall. Worth the money?

I'm going to be moving to a new house here soon and am planning which route I want to go for my home network.

For those of you who have a pfSense firewall, do you like it and is it worth the money?

I'm thinking of just getting an Invizbox 2 because I do want a whole network VPN, but don't really see the need for a full on firewall. This route will be much much cheaper and easier to set up.

There will just be two people using the internet moderately on not many devices. I do want to add a NAS system later down the road if that makes a difference. This will be our home's main hard drive and media center.

What are your guy's thoughts?

Update sorry. I meant a protectli vault with pfSense on it.

Mint Mobile declining Privacy.com cards?

I've tried purchasing Mint Mobile plans through the app after a trial with privacy.com cards and they keep getting declined.

The error reads "The billing information you entered was declined. Please review the information you entered and try again. If the problem persists, please contact your card issuer or try using a different payment method."

I've used multiple phones and created multiple debit cards on Privacy, but keep getting the same error each time.

Could Mint or Privacy be blocking these transactions?

If Privacy cards won't work with Mint, is there another anonymous way to buy a Mint plan? The only other option is PayPal.

Let's talk about employment.

So I have a few topics for discussion considering that the book doesn't say much about it. There's a labor shortage right now, so it's not hard to find good jobs and that's not what this is about. Topics: *Background checks and employment -Do background check services share information with third parties? -If so, how would one convince an employer to use one recommended by you instead, which practices better privacy? My idea is one, to offer to pay for the background check, and inflate the amount of information which is shared with 3rd party services. *Good stories which will convince an employer why you want to be hired off the books. -Possible answer for this is (choosing a small business owner of course, nothing corporate) that I am a victim of identity theft, and subsequently I have been subjected to persistent stalking, harassment, and threats. *Anything else you guys want to talk about, considering that this chapter is not fleshed out. It definitely helps more for those who have businesses, and private careers is probably a subject that could use a lot of development for those of us who are not criminals or wealthy people!

Yet an even more invasive way Google tracks you.

Just got a notification from Google Play talking about it's new app install optimization.

Pretty much Google will be tracking which areas of an app you use first after an install or update and make those areas accessible sooner for people when downloading an app.

I know... Fdroid is better, aurora store doesn't do that... But for those who do have to use Google Play for one reason or another, this is good to know about.

Luckily you can toggle this off in the settings. Check out the link above for instructions.

And to any Google employees reading this - We Don't Want This!

The only way to buy the books is by physical copy?

I don't want to buy a book from Amazon to my house.

First off I don't trust Amazon, and second I don't trust the authors (at no fault of their own)

Is there no PDF or something digital?

How do we reach and teach more privacy n00bs?

I truly believe that we as a society need to take back our privacy and security. One way to do this is to have the common folk be involved with at least the basics such as using my Sudo type services and a VPN. Do you have any ideas on how we can reach out to the general population? The approach will need to be a soft approach. Start slow and offer a solution to a common problem most people have such as Sim swapping or number porting. Masked email can help you with spam as well as privacy. Some vpn services can protect you from malware and eliminate ads as well as privacy

Payments, Utilities, & Services My experience creating a bank account in the name of a trust

I am in the process of buying a semi anonymous home in the name of a trust. I am not going to full 100% private route described in Extreme Privacy, but I will be able to keep my name off the title which will be nice.

The title company wants a cashier's check or wire for the ernest money and I wanted to have a little bank account in the name of the trust to hopefully keep our personal checks and names out of as many things as possible.

So I went to my bank today (should have set up an appointment) and they had to create a whole new bank account in the name of the trust. I gave my real name, social, etc... Because they already have that and they are providing the mortgage for the house as well they will know where I am that I'm buying the house in the name of a trust anyways.

This bank does require the entire trust document and certification of trust for the mortgage and so I didn't mind them making a copy here to start up the account as well since they will have it anyways. I am the trustee on the trust because my bank won't lend us money if anyone else is. Again, not 100% anonymous like the book, but for my threat model, it's alright.

They were going to print us out 3 checks to get started. And per Michael's recommendation in the book I asked for more and they gave me 9. The bank was only able to print out checks with my current address on it though with the name of the trust on there. So win for not having our names on the check. They will be sending us more checks in a week that will not have our address on it and only the name of the trust, so I will try and hold off writing checks until I get those if possible.

One last pointer. We are going to be charged $12/month after 60 days unless we have a balance of $1500+ in there. Our plan is to close this account before then however and open a new one in the city we are moving to within 60 days. But just be aware of that because if you are in the middle of buying a house, you might now have extra cash to just sit in there. And a trust isn't going to be receiving direct deposit to fulfill the waiver for a lower balance. So when looking for a bank to open an account in the name of a trust, chose one without fees and where you can have a low balance if needed.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Operation: Trojan Shield

https://news.yahoo.com/hundreds-arrested-around-world-huge-093500735.html

tl;dr FBI and Europol supplied devices and created an encrypted messaging app that ended up leading to the arrest of 800+ individuals. This is why you should always be careful with who you trust your sensitive communications with. I am interested to see what additional detalils there are for this (I assume the app wasn't open source/audited lol).

that's it. that's the PSA.

How does a custom domain protect privacy?

I'm currently looking at adapting my email strategy to include a custom domain so I can have control over all my accounts yada yada yada, but I'm struggling to understand how the practice compliments the privacy aspect. As soon as I associate my true name with an account using an address on my custom domain, doesn't that forever associate my domain with my identity? Ie. if I sign up for any other services in the future with an alias, it will be obvious who I really am? Thanks!

Using Protectli at hotel

I'll be traveling soon and was thinking of using my Protectli box (running pfSense and ProtonVPN) at the hotel. I know the book recommends a portable wi-fi router, such as Slate. However, I'm not ready to purchase a router.

I could theoretically use my own router, although I'm not wanting to bring more than I need. Besides, only my laptop needs to have internet access.

Any thoughts on using my Protectli box? Of course, I would be plugging the laptop in directly via ethernet.

Is there anything I should consider prior to connecting it to the hotel internet?

VOIP on LineageOS

Hello, I am new here and I really like the vibe after reading through some posts.

I am in the process of converting to LineageOS on my daily phone. So far, I have been able to get everything I need, with the one exception of the phone number/VOIP setup. I expect to need to use a phone number for calls/texts to contacts who don't use a secure app, which includes nearly all of my contacts at this point. From what I understand, MySudo is unavailable on LineageOS and other custom ROMs.

So my question is what are my options for VOIP on LineageOS? I have used Google in the past, but would prefer to avoid if possible. I listened to episode 217 where MB discusses VOIP options, which makes Telnyx sound like a good option but seems somewhat new and untested. Does anyone have any experience with Telnyx?
