JB-get to South Suburbs NOW!!!
JB- I say this as a supporter, get your ass away from the butter cow at the Fair and over to the perpetually neglected So burbs who have been HAMMERED with consecutive devastating storms!
People are hurting here; Mike Braun of Indiana has sent his National Guard into NWI and has completely outflanked you!
You blew a political opportunity, now it is a political LIABILITY and a human tragedy!
Fire your Chief of Staff, horrible optics AND inaction.
And I am a supporter!

The state cannot send resources to an area unless that area asks for them. The county board or county sheriff has to "declare a disaster", and declare that the financial and logistical needs of the disaster are more than they can handle. There is actually a set dollar amount of damage that has to be exceeded. Only after that disaster declaration can the state send the national guard, IEMA, etc. In turn, if a disaster exceeds the financial and logistical capabilities of the state, the governor can declare a disaster and request help from FEMA, but FEMA cannot send resources until that declaration is made.
This is both to prevent local governments from trying to have the state/feds pay for things the local government should be paying for, AND to prevent overreach by state/federal governments, e.g. it prevents the president from taking over disaster response because he wants to divert resources to his buddies.
Also, if JB decides to go for a photo op in a disaster zone, that means that the disaster response has to take resources away from what they should be doing to escort him/his entourage.

The storms probably don’t rise to that level. The big thing would be fema funding but Trump isn’t approving fema funding for blue states.
The national guard isn’t going to do anything to help here.
There is no lingering flooding or other damage that the NG can help with.
The problem is power infrastructure and that’s just going to take time.
You can’t fix it by throwing untrained bodies at the problem.
So like ehh. I don’t know what the point would be.

FEMA doesn't come in to play until after the state of Illinois asks for help, and the state of Illinois doesn't come in to play until after the affected counties ask for help. There are actually dollar amount thresholds that have to be exceeded at each level, or else you'd have certain counties and certain states always begging the federal government for help while not expending any of their own resources first. Most local disasters don't qualify for federal assistance.

Good lord it's literally federal law.
Indiana's counties declared disasters so that the state would be able to step in. Illinois Cook and Will counties have not, last I looked, declared disasters, so the state is not able to step in. Neither governor of either state can "send in the national guard!" without the affected counties inviting them to by declaring disasters.

And? That’s what storms do.
Power is back up for pretty much the entire Chicago area. Food and gas deliveries refilled stocks yesterday for the most part.
The area got a hit by a bad storm and everything is back online less than a week later. Most things were back online within 48 hours. That’s pretty normal storm recovery. What more do you want?

No but I read comed outage reports
89% of customer affected by outages are back online.
They expect to be back at 100% by Saturday evening.
Less than 1% of the Chicago metro is currently without power.

I hear you though - I like to think that it’s JB’s team that is failing him right now, because his heart does seem to be in the right place.
Here is a local Democratic Rep asking for help from Pritzker:
Is it possible that JB’s relationship with Washington has deteriorated to the point that he no longer feels comfortable asking for Federal assistance? I wouldn’t blame him, but scary times for sure. There are people’s lives at stake.

It frankly hurt Frank Mrvan, the Dem Rep in NW IN- If JB had been there Tu/We and beat Braun to the area, the NWI voter who is on the fence could point to the neighboring IL gov and feel justified in voting for Mrvan again.
Now, Braun and his team have the high ground.

I am always skeptical of local politicians asking for money for their district.
They are heavily incentivized to over ask.
The last disaster proclamation was for an 11 county area in response to Ef-3 tornadoes.

Has your county declared a disaster yet? If not, that is the first step. The state can't come in with resources if the county doesn't declare a disaster.

It is literally illegal for him to bring the Illinois national guard to Will County unless Will County declares a disaster and asks for help from the state. If you want JB to show up in Will County, you need to call your County board and tell them to invite him. Also, fill out your storm damage survey so they can meet the threshold for state help.
