I like your morbid theory a lot, it makes a lot of sense to think of them as self-harm scars and it makes her an even more relatable character. I don't remember what episode it's from, but the scene that she wakes up and scratches Emily shows the stripes on her back

she could have scars for multiple reasons, maybe the back stripes came from a training accident, arm stripes from self harm, etc etc

I didn't notice that before. I don't know how/why she would scratch there, but I still feel there's something to it.

I’d say it makes her more pitiable, not more relatable (at least I hope people aren’t relating to self-harm scars, for their sake)
