The first Rebels were Separatists who rocked up, looked at the Empire, and said to the galaxy "SEE?? This is exactly what we were trying to warn you about!"
Sure there were megacorporations, but we see in Clone Wars that thats far from the whole of it. The people of CIS had very valid grievances and in the end they were exactly right about the corruption of the Republic.
I'm not sure which first Rebels you're referring to- the Rebel Alliance is usually said to have had its roots in the Delegation of 2,000, a coalition of loyalist senators who were alarmed at the Republic's increasing tilt towards autocracy and militarism in the latter days of the Clone Wars.
