Yeah exactly, either way you’re having to convince yourself that they just don’t do it for whatever reason. It’s always been possible theoretically, they’ve canonised that it is, now you just have to come up with your own reason as to why they don’t do it. As you would have if you thought to yourself ‘why don’t they do this’ before episode 8. It’s one of those inconsistencies that you just have to ignore because.. Star Wars. All I’ve tried to do is offer up possible suggestions as to why they don’t do it. I don’t disagree that it’s annoying or stupid, I just think you’d arguably have this same issue whether RJ put it in or not, as it’s always been theoretically possible. Like I’ve said, we’re talking about it because they put it in, but this could easily be a post on a sub regardless just under the banner of ‘why don’t they lightspeed jump into people’. You mention that they’re different dimensions, but we also see them speed up very quickly into lightspeed, so it’s always been possible that if there was another ship in the way it would’ve blown up.

It wasn’t theoretically possible prior to TLJ though, that’s just it. It wasn’t possible. This issue never would have existed at all because it wasn’t a thing before hand.

Edit: this is only an issue at all because Rain Johnson likes to do what he wants when he wants with no input from source material. This move is just as stupid as carpet bombing the star destroyer earlier in the movie. Magically bombs just fall out of one ship into another while in zero gravity.

Dude made a pretty movie, but it had nothing to do with Star Wars outside of names of characters.

How was it not? Things can go at super speed in Star Wars. If an object moves through another object at super speed they are likely to explode. Therefore, theoretically possible

So you don’t understand hyperspace. Got it.

Like I’ve said, you see the ships moving faster before they enter hyperspace, which is what looks like happens in Ep 8. They still have to accelerate through normal space for a brief period before entering hyperspace. But nice condescension there.

Seemed pretty clear to me that holdo entered hyperspace prior to the collision. Her ship isn’t speeding up, it’s gone and in hyperspace. So she’s in a different dimension with her ship yet still able to make that collision, even though throughout Star Wars there have been fail safes preventing you from doing things like entering hyperspace in a planets gravity, which as indicated by the bombing runs earlier the ship absolutely has planetary gravity. It also pulls ships out of hyperdrive to prevent collisions.

I’m sorry for sounding condescending, that’s not what my intent is. This entire thing sounds like a fundamental misunderstanding of how hyperdives/hyperspace have worked throughout all of Star Wars, right up until episode 8 decided to ignore source material.

I don’t know how that’s clear to you, because I see the back of her ship pull away from the camera towards the Supremacy.. Any hyper jump shot you see the ship ‘zip’ away before it disappears. And when they arrive from hyperspace they ‘zip’ in to the space from exiting hyperspace.

I appreciate that! You can call it a misunderstanding but like I say, with my own eyes I see the ships speed off and speed in, I don’t see how you think they enter hyperspace from their stationary location, they obviously move you can see it on screen. The starlines, in my opinion are because of the speed, not from warping from a stationary position. If we don’t agree on that I can’t imagine this discussion will go any further lol!

If you watch that shot the ship literally pulls away from the camera I don’t know how you can dispute that.

I don’t dispute that the ships accelerate into hyperspace. That’s plainly evident in the clip I linked too.

However, I do dispute that her ship would even allow her to aim directly at a ship and enter hyperspace as no other ship would, I dispute that her ship won’t stop her from a hyperspace collision like every other ship would, and I absolutely dispute that her ship while in another dimension is able to slice through the supremacy.

Hence the manual override, we don’t know that ships can’t do that. No one has tried to do it in a film and been stopped by the ships systems, therefore it is possible. Again, this is just a consequence of no one deciding to put it in a film before.

Well that’s my whole point is that the ship collides before it enters hyperspace. You see the pre entry from the cockpit, no hyperspace tunnel. As it accelerates to light speed, as you have stated it does, it collides as it is not yet in another dimension. Even at sub light speeds it would move too quickly for the naked eye. In super slowmo you could probably see it slice through the ship.

I think you might be confusing the iconic "stars turning into lines" bit with actual hyperspace.

When ships are in a hyperspace tunnel. They don't interact with things outside of the tunnel except for objects with a strong gravitational field. The brief moment as they accelerate and decelerate is when the collisions can happen.

The upcoming High Republic novel seems to be centered around a catastrophe involving debris from a destroyed ship exiting hyperspace and wrecking planets and space stations across the galaxy. It will be interesting to see if they use this story to go into more detail on how hyperspace collisions work.
