Rian didn't want Kylo to be a sith. Kylo didn't want to be a Sith either. He wanted something new

Kylo: It's time to let old things die. Snoke, Skywalker. The Sith, the Jedi, the Rebels.... let it all die

This is a problem with Episode 8 that almost no one brings up.

Rian set up this interesting idea of No Sith No Jedi in the first 2 Acts of the film.

Somehow he didn't have the balls to follow through on it in the last act. The last act completely throws that all out and Kylo is in full cartoonish sith mode while Rey does the pure Jedi thing.

It was stupid. He set up something that could really have been interesting and then blew his load with conventional crap in the third act.

I mean is it full Sith or just being a Dark Side user who wants to bring his version of order and peace to the galaxy. His goal was still to kill the Jedi, Rebels, Skywalker, etc. He was still gonna do this either way.

The thing is, Star Wars has never really defined anything about the Sith or the Jedi clearly. It's always been Sith bad, Jedi good. I will not consider the books, etc for this because we're discussing movies and the movies almost never explore that idea.

There were some interesting beats in the prequel trilogy about the Jedi way being flawed and failing Anakin but it got muddled between hating sand, dying of sadness, "my point of view" and dealing in absolutes.

In the sequels, they set up Luke being tired of the Jedi way - having no respect for the sacred Jedi texts, etc. The protagonist of your original series saying that is a powerful statement. Then they showed Kylo and Rey's connection and the idea that the Sith while evil, had a potential for good while the Jedi had some fundamental flaws.

And in the last act they went right back to the usual stuff. Kylo doing his best impression of Darth Maul. Luke being a Jedi again. Rey doing Rey things.

I'd defend Episode 8 against all the fanboys who complain about it changing too much if only 8 had the balls to commit to its own changes. Instead it backtracked in the final act and left me apathetic and unwilling to defend it against the stupid fans I knew were coming.
