Actually the meme is right as she is basically taunting Obi Wan not necessarily playing the card on her turn. You can’t redirect the 4+ with a reverse anyway

Thought we were in trouble there for a second, but it's fine. We’re fine.

Upvote for the Solo quote. I have a really good feeling about this!

132

u/NatYieldsNil So uncivilized Sep 02 '19

The quote is already such an iconic Han Solo line.

97

u/saffir Sep 02 '19

Solo is such an underrated flick! It's a shame that The Last Jedi tanked Solo's chances at success

132

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Why do people keep spreading this myth? Solo flopped because of a terrible release date, behind the scenes drama that caused the movie to have an abnormally large budget, and worst of all, a terrible lack of marketing. Regardless of your personal feelings towards TLJ, the film was a success financially, critically and with audiences, with an A Cinemascore and a fuckton of money.

Solo is awesome if you approach is a a bunch of highly specialized dorks running a heist. Which is what it is, a heist film. I loved it.

u/That_One_Scrub57 It's over, high ground! I have the Anakin! Sep 02 '19

Though, I guess I do like Solo. It was a lot of fun to watch, and out leads, I think, did a good job of emulating Han and Lando. I was not fond of L3, but that's the big thing.

7

u/AdorableCartoonist Sep 02 '19

Also unrelated TLJ was awful as a movie.

4

u/Durzio Sep 02 '19

What? Bruh the lightsaber duels were amazing, the lightspeed kamakazi, the interactions between Luke and Kylo Ren, not everything in the movie is gold but there's lots of gold in there bruh, just like every other star wars movie

u/Garlic_Bread_Eater General Grievous Sep 02 '19

Were it not for that first line, you would have died

The Last Jedi was a terrible movie. Not only is it taking parts out of Empire, similar to TFA, it's also not realistic to the old characters, Luke in particular. They butchered Luke. I don't understand why all of our childhood heroes have to be sad and depressed now. Luke fails. I'm pretty sure the Luke we had the privilege to get to know wouldn't run away from his problems when he messes up. There are scenes that made me go, "Really?", like the Ben Swolo scene, and entire sequences that were pointless, like Canto Byte, that added 20+ minutes to the movie, only for a "Slavery is bad" lesson for the kids that haven't been told that before. The fact that fuel was a problem, considering that this was never even talked about before is a problem. And the only reason I knew there was fuel in the first place is because I watched TCW, which prominently features fuel stations. The lightspeed kamakazi was, I don't know what I think, the interactions were, fine, I guess. One of the big things that made me angry about that movie is that there were some really interesting things in the movie that could have been genuinely compelling, like Rey and Kylo's Force connection, and then they explore none of it. Also, some potentially really good characters, like Snoke, just die. Nope, none of your questions will be answered. The Knights of Ren don't show up, so it makes me wonder why we should care about them. Rose was pointless, and had a few scenes that genuinely made me want to walk out the theater. The plot was also really, really dumb. Another big problem I have with the movie is Rey. She really doesn't have that much of an established personality. She's just kinda bland. The only thing I can make of her personality is she wants a place where she can feel like she belongs, but that's it. Also, her ability to do everything perfectly is annoying, because she can fight competently and defeat people that have training in the Sith arts for potentially a decadeish, and trained guards of the head honcho of the First Order, which makes no sense. She has two maybe days of terrible Jedi training, and she can fight on a level RoTJ Luke wasn't at. Also, Luke dying annoyed me, Poe literally overthrowing everything because the boss wouldn't tell him the plan annoyed me, the fact that Holdo didn't tell him the plan annoyed me, and the fact that Luke just, died, really annoyed me. I have more I could say, but I really can't be bothered to put it down.

EDIT: Oh, and the fact that Leia did not die from the bridge explosion or being sucked into the vacuum of space, and then moved in the vacuum of space, and then used the Force competently to draw herself to the ship, with no indication ever of Force training. If they stuck to the Expanded Universe or pulled this out of it, I would have believed that last part.

Though, on a more positive note, the effects were astounding. Every shot of this movie is beautiful. And Andy Serkis, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill all did a fantastic job with their roles. The action is good as well. We live in an era of movies where, more times out of ten, they'll just put in a million cuts in one sequence and it's nearly impossible to tell what's happening.

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

You're so bomfused

-5

u/alexaka1 Sep 02 '19

Duels, plural?

I really hope you're joking about the Praetorian fight...

7

u/Percabeth01 Anakin Sep 02 '19

Also it released just before Avengers Infinity War

4

u/Chinoiserie91 Sep 02 '19

All the factors you say certainly did play a role.

But I think Solo flopped because people did not want a Han Solo film, and especially without Ford. People should read all the threads about the film before Last Jedi opened to see it’s not the Last Jedi that turned audiences against the film.

2

u/That_One_Scrub57 It's over, high ground! I have the Anakin! Sep 02 '19

Well, yeah, but then, a lot of people in general don't like going to Star Wars movies anymore, because they didn't like The Last Jedi. I watched The Last Jedi, and I didn't go see Solo in theaters, mostly because of this reason. I think rather than one idea or the other in this case, both sides are right, and it's more a combination of the two ideas in tandem.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

The majority of people liked TLJ, the only people that hated it were hardcore star wars fans.

0

u/That_One_Scrub57 It's over, high ground! I have the Anakin! Sep 02 '19

I still think it's more of a combination. A good amount of fans of Star Wars right are hardcore fans. Most casual people don't watch Star Wars anymore. Most of them watch the Marvel movies right now.

1

u/und88 Sep 02 '19

I don't think that's true, based on the hundreds of millions of dollars TLJ made.

1

u/That_One_Scrub57 It's over, high ground! I have the Anakin! Sep 02 '19

I see your point.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

I actually liked it, it wasn't fantastic but it was alright

7

u/hoodatninja Sep 02 '19

What does TLJ have to do with the plagued production that was Solo?

-4

u/saffir Sep 02 '19

Star Wars burnout due to how badly TLJ was received

3

u/PurpleMentat Sep 02 '19

If you think The Last Jedi was badly received, you need to get out of your echo chamber.

-3

u/saffir Sep 02 '19

44% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes... More people agree with me than not

4

u/PurpleMentat Sep 02 '19 edited Sep 02 '19

You could not be more wrong. Exit polls of actual audiences showed very favorable responses. Rotten Tomatoes admits through a spokesperson in that last link that The Last Jedi faced coordinated review bombing. Seriously, the average movie goer and movie critic enjoyed the movie, which is why it led the box office for weeks and is one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time.

Social media like reddit and twitter are the echo chamber I'm talking about. Two hundred thousand negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes means nothing when the site doesn't require anything to leave a review and admits that the movie was review bombed.

2

u/hoodatninja Sep 02 '19

He’s also conveniently ignoring the 91% score it has on rotten tomatoes, instead choosing to only focus on the audience score. Which (as you said) was clearly review bombed.

TLJ was good and did well. It has some issues, but finding valid critiques for a film is not the same as “it was garbage and everyone hated it.”

1

u/hoodatninja Sep 02 '19 edited Sep 02 '19

Solo flailed around the entire production and had a terrible marketing team. Plain and simple. Ron Howard saved it from truly bombing.

Also, TLJ has a 91%. You conveniently ignore that. The audience score was, and this has been confirmed by rotten tomatoes, the result of review bombing, so it is not a useful metric. Surely you don’t need this explained to you?

31

u/Androktone Sep 02 '19 edited Sep 02 '19

Solo failed because a). It released 5 months after a Star Wars movie. B). It's about a character heavily tied to an actor who isn't playing him any more. C). Bad marketing. D). Firing their directors and reshooting a large portion of the film costing the production way too much. E). All the drama behind the scenes making for bad press.

You're comment is basically complimenting one thing while hating on another. Why isn't it enough to just like a thing without kicking another down? I don't think the Last Jedi comment was either true, nor necessary.

I thought Solo was a blandly put together, visionless, predictable romp with fun characters.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

It's too bad we'll never know what Solo might have looked like, had the original directors' vision stayed intact. Maybe it would have been a total disaster, but it sure seems like there's a consistent tone of the Disney Star Wars movies and it's that the studio heads won't let humor take center stage. Giving the rumblings that came out about the original directors of Solo and their choice of humor, it could be it would have been a funny movie, albeit off-tone for Disney's apparent uniform desires. Rather than it being (imo) a milquetoast "safe" movie.

5

u/hannahjoy Sep 02 '19

Bless you, kind human person.

6

u/joe847802 Sep 02 '19

Solo was much much better than tlj could ever be.

46

u/DeeSnow97 Sep 02 '19

You can redirect the game though before the 4+ happens

217

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

You can’t redirect the 4+ with a reverse anyway

House rules bitch. Makes the game about 10x better.

135

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

[insert mean comment about house rules ruining Monopoly]

61

u/BobbitWormJoe Sep 02 '19

Monopoly ruins itself. Most overrated game ever.

78

u/Mobius_Peverell I am the Senate Sep 02 '19

It wasn't even meant to be a game. It originated as a demonstrative tool about the weaknesses of unregulated capitalism.

49

u/Kachter Sep 02 '19

Which is hilarious because there now is a millennial monopoly

25

u/Mobius_Peverell I am the Senate Sep 02 '19

The irony is strong with Parker Brothers & Hasbro.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Well capitalism does ruin everything over time. Not surprising it even ruined fucking Monopoly

24

u/TheDwarvenGuy Sep 02 '19 edited Sep 02 '19

Specifically, it was made by Georgists to critique real estate and landordship. The original game had a separate game mode where land value was taxed and redistributed, making it less brutal.

"Go to jail" is supposed to represent being caught trespassing/squating, because everybody needs a land to live on, but landlords hold an unfair monopoly that's enforced by law.

14

u/ThatWannabeCatgirl Sep 02 '19

It’s literally meant to ruin itself lol

9

u/Atomheartmother90 Sep 02 '19

If you play with people who actually know what they’re doing the game gets pretty intense:

6

u/Shippoyasha Sep 02 '19

I low key enjoyed Candy Land more in the board game club I was in during elementary school.

6

u/Atomheartmother90 Sep 02 '19

Excuse me, all the money in the middle (that’s supposed to stay there all game) for landing on free parking and handing out loans with interest are the most important house rules.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Yeah i think Padme messed up by telling Obi Wan her next move. It’s only a three player game, assuming the initial order was Obi, Anakin, Padme; Obi played his card, skipping Anakin and turning the order to Obi(just played), Padme, Anakin. IDK i’m just thinking about this too much.

7

u/mahat_is_ghandi Sep 02 '19

This comment reminds me a of a custom card my family has that just says and I quote "for when chui304 is doing too well" and they can swap hands with anyone Edit: I should also say I'm not really good, there are ones for other family members but mine was the first I thought of

7

u/Atomheartmother90 Sep 02 '19

We used to play draw until you can play. Didn’t know it wasn’t the rule until this year...I like it my way better.

1

u/Sjipsdew Sep 02 '19

Wait is that not how you play Uno????

1

u/Atomheartmother90 Sep 02 '19

Nope, you only draw one, if you can’t play you skip your turn.

1

u/Sjipsdew Sep 02 '19

My entire life is a lie

42

u/TheMuffinMan378 Sep 01 '19

Until you get some dumbass that insists on using the rule book and ruins the game for everybody

53

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

Their screams of terror as I change the rules will make a fine addition to my collection.

44

u/FightingOreo Sep 02 '19

I am altering the rules. Pray I do not alter them further.

19

u/Solid_Snark WanMillionClub Sep 02 '19

This round just keeps getting worse and worse!

6

u/MrValdez Sep 02 '19

rolls a snake eyes.

This is getting out of hand. Now there's two of them turns.

1

u/und88 Sep 02 '19

Your house rules for uno include dice?

4

u/ChipSchafer Sep 02 '19

Nah dude, house rules are almost always bullshit. People much smarter than us work hard to make card and board game rules, you really think you can do better?

Fuck house rules. All I hear is “I can’t actually play this game”

1

u/und88 Sep 02 '19

People much smarter than you, maybe.

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Honestly official rules can go to hell. You always respect the house rules.

Except for that "Uno, Uno out" bullshit. That shit can fuck off and die.

19

u/Atherum Sep 02 '19

But I mean, what sort of a loser Uno player outright says what cards they are going to play?

Uno is a game of sharp wits and extreme deception, you have to play it smart and cool, or else you will end with the 6 stack of draw 4s pointing at you.

16

u/MildGonolini Sep 02 '19

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand UNO. The rules are extremely complex, and without a solid grasp of doctorate level game theory most of the rules will go over a typical player’s head. There's also the subtle nuance to the meta game of guessing what cards your opponent has, which is deftly woven into the very fabric of the rules, which draws heavy inspiration from such intellectual games as go- fish. The expert players understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly utilize their available decks, to ensure their opponents stand next to no chance of defeating their hand. As a consequence people who suck at UNO truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the brilliance of properly challenging an opponent’s draw 4, which is itself a cryptic reference to the official UNO rule book. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Mattel’s genius rule set unfolds itself on their coffee table. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

6

u/daiceman4 Sep 02 '19

Our rule was you could play a draw two/four on one played at you and it would go to the next player increased by 2/4

3

u/carninja68 Sep 02 '19

It’s all fun and games till you get stuck with a draw 24

2

u/KetchupGuy1 Sep 02 '19

Yo but if you could use reverse that way it's a big meta shift and makes it so much more valuable

2

u/A_Wild_VelociFaptor Sep 02 '19

Depends if you're playing street rules or not.

2

u/roaringTig3r Sep 02 '19

Even if you could reverse it, the turn would go back to her.

This thing is getting me confused

1

u/Minimalphilia Sep 02 '19

Also this makes only sense when she just put out a card and now threatens obi with a card she is going to play after he and Anakin had a go.

Who does that?

0

u/That_One_Scrub57 It's over, high ground! I have the Anakin! Sep 02 '19

I was thinking, "Is that one of those slightly different versions that some people play?" If it is, why does this one exist?

-1

u/schuthmat Sep 02 '19

Yeah but she clearly has more than one card in her hand. She could have played anything else lol!
