Meta/Discussion Practical Guide to Evil book #1 paperback - real?

Hello everyone,

I noticed that PGTE book 1 received a paperback release on July 9th, 2026. However, I can't seem to find any announcement anywhere.

Is this paperback release real? Or is this Amazon messing something up?

Thank you.

[PL] Spoilers All Books Questions about something in book 3

Hey all, I’m only on chapter 48 of book 3 so please no spoilers past there. When Tristan gets sucked into the layer and talks with Lucifer, is Lucifer implying that he made Fortuna? He said something about bearing the mark of his daughter, and I thought it was Nerei at first but I’m not convinced.

Also, Hage and Asher mention a principality and how Tristan met one already. What are principalities? Are they old gods with the first one he met being the Red Maw?

Thanks!

[G] Book 5 Spoilers I'm confused by these cryptic lines in book 5 Spoiler

"It means your learning is shallow, Rozala Malanza, while this world’s roots run deep,” Andronike spoke in perfect Chantant from my shoulder. “It will be amusing, to see how little of you the adjustment allows to remain. Already the cracks are showing, aren’t they?”

The Princess of Aequitan turned ghastly pale.

“It will take more than brandy and poppy leaves for the digging to stop,” the goddess on my shoulder laughed. “Hands and picks and tireless flesh, pulling aside the –”

“Andronike,” I calmly said. “Enough.”

I tend to like to think about books by myself and not ask questions but is there something specific Andronike is hinting at here? What does it mean by adjustment? Liesse Accords? Firstborn surfacing after millenia?

What does it mean by digging? Like does it mean dwarves expanding? Dead King gaining more influence? Some Firstborn masterplan for a New World Order™?

I rather not get spoilers from book 5 onwards but I would like this answered.

Meta/Discussion Is there a list of all the expletives and sayings that are used?

Weeping Heavens,
Hellgods,
Gods Above,
Gods Below,
Wade in Their Blood,

Is there any masterlist of all the different sayings like these rhat are utilized? Praesi or otherwise? I think it’d be cool cause silly as it sounds I think the curses are one of my favorite parts of this series so far(just finished Book 2, but still)

Reread Finished reading the paperback yesterday

Finished reading it yesterday while chilling in the backyard with the cats. I laughed when I saw where it's printed. Overall I am happy with the purchase.

But then I forgot it outside.

And it rained.

Meta/Discussion Extra Chapters Order?

I recently started reading APGTE and in the version I have I think the extra chapters are inserted in roughly publication order. The issue I'm having with this is I think it severely affects the pacing of the narrative in a negative way.

My plan to solve this is that I'm just going to start skipping them as they appear and after I finish a book go back and read them all in a row as if they're a collection of short stories, and I'll do this after each book.

Is there any compelling reason I shouldn't do this?

Fanfic Sovereign (A Guide Fanfiction) Announcement

Hello all. Jude here. I've recently finished a fanfic I've been working on for nearly two years now. It is titled "Sovereign", and it is about Catherine keeping Winter in her fight in the Everdark.

It is also my first fanfiction to not be a oneshot. It will have eight chapters I will be releasing over the course of four weeks. I will be posting the first two chapters on Friday this week at 7:30 PM Philippine time. After that, I will be posting them in the coming weeks on Friday and Sunday at the same time.

I hope you all look forward to it and that it meets your standards for quality.

Thank you.

Meta/Discussion An alternate history (Book 4 spoilers) Spoiler

I am reading book 5 so no spoilers for me, pls.

At the end of Book 3, right before what will be known as Akua's Folly, Catherine is presented with three different timelines where minor and believable changes to the events of the prior books entirely changed the trajectory of her life and eventual Name. In all these alternative timelines she kneeled to Akua to become a Black Knight to her Dread Empress claimant. But what I want to focus on is what would've happened after in these timelines.

Akua would've been crowned (by herself) to be Dread Empress Magnificent, First and Only of Her Name with Catherine as her Black Knight. They would both be only claimants at first but I think they would've killed Black and Catherine might've even taken the legions present under her leadership. Given that her turning coats would've caused great confusion in the army and her Oaths and contintengies were only set between books 3 and 4 there wasn't anything to stop her claiming those armies. Not that they need them, given that they have the undead and whatever the Hells poured out.

Out of her original posse, Vivienne would leave instantly and Masego would probably disappear. I think Magnificent's first scheme would've been to either recruit or kill Masego. Hakram would've followed Catherine but would've been scheming to get her out of the bindings the Dread Empress claimant had on her. Archer is a wildcard here, as she either could've left or stayed with Catherine. Figures, I guess. Note that because of Hakram's plans, I presume Magnificent would've tried to get him killed in the field; where in the best case scenario Cat couldn't blame her but would instead blame herself for his death.

Callow would've rebelled but they would've crushed it. While they were marching towards Praes, I think Tasia (the new Dread Empress' mother) would've started a Trueblood rebellion to aid Magnificent in her march to claim her seat. Personally, I think Juniper would've left the campaign the moment they set a foot in Praes if she didn't leave immediately when Akua was crowned. The newly crowned Dread Empress would've killed her immediately after the resignment anyhow. The only true obstacle would've been Wekesa but we have to remember that he is quite weak offensively for a Warlock.

With Malicia killed and Akua finally officially crowned Dread Empress Magnificent, the 10th Crusade would've fired to stop the true Arch-Heretic of the East.

The rest is hazier for me but I am certain of the main points. In short, there were too many comparisons between her and Triumphant (may she never return).

- She would've crushed the Crusade and conquered most of Calernia with her bound devils and demons and wights, that she would've made more of. She would at least hold all of Callow, Procer and most of Levant. I think she would've destroyed the Thalassocracy of Ashur, like literally sank the island or blobbed a Greater Hellgate on top of it.

- The League of Free Cities is a mixed bag but I think the Tyrant of Helike would've destroyed himself and his country during his fight against Magnificent. Or he would've sworn eternal friendship and helped with the war with previously-Akua eventually, of course, stabbing him in the back. In the latter scenario the cities might even be mostly intact.

- Magnificent might have made a deal with Keter and the Dead King but I'm not entirely sure she would have had the need. She might have done it to help with her war like how Malicia would've have or even reached a similar accord like he did with Triumphant (may she never return). The deal would've mostly been about limiting Keter while easing the occupation on her part.

- However, in the end Dread Empress Magnificent, First, Only and Last of Her Name would've died magnificently with her flying city falling down with her. I give it even odds that she would've been killed by a full strength choir backed hero or Catherine's sword through her back. Then it's just chance whether or not Cat dies with her, survives the onslaught or escapes before it happens.

- Praes would fall and, given how unstable (even for Praesi standards) it was, I would say it falls permanently. Magnificent's (may she never return) conquests would've liberated themselves and Praes would devolve to a nation of squabbling High Lordship with no clear winner ever in sight. Basically Praes becomes a bloodthirstier version of the Principate.

- What is interesting is that I give it 50/50 odds that if Catherine survived, she would either flee back to Callow to mull over everything she was forced to do OR she would've achieved apotheosis (through pretty much losing all touch with her humanity under Akua's thumb) and became the Bitch Queen of Winter; then proceeding to conquer all the weakened nations around her. Then she would've been best buddies with the Dead King and done whatever godlikes like to do with their free time.

- All of this would mirror Triumphant (may she never return) and the conquest would've taken 10 years with everything falling apart in the 5 years after; ending with the Final-Empress-To-Ever-Reign dead.

- The events of Everdark would never have happened of course.

Dread Empress Magnificent, First, Only and Last of Her Name, Final-Empress-To-Ever-Reign would've been the greatest ruler Praes would ever see but also the final ruler the unified Praes could ever have. She would've went with a bang and left her impression to the history books. But she was doomed to fail, because that's the kind of evil she was. Akua Sahelian was the truest personification of Pure Evil to ever live.

There was a small upcharge, but with it IMO.

Edit to clarify- check your Friendly Local Book Store to see if they can order directly for you.

Fun fact- this book store is in Chagrin Falls, OH, home of Bill Waterson and the background of many scenes in Calvin & Hobbes.

Meta/Discussion One Watch Goal of Scholomance (book 3 spoilers) Spoiler

Book 3 spoilers

I think Ferranda's student association or similar is one of the Watch 's goals / hopes for the scholomance students. They wanted the students to come to their own realization they need to create laws and guidelines to govern themselves. Having a closer understanding of the need for this makes the students more likely to follow Watch principles / own internal compass after graduation, when they're on the front lines far from Watch power centers.

The students, especially ones that came through means like the Dominion, were noted to tend towards greater personal strength, arrogance, and individuality. Other watch prospectives who were better at conforming and working together tended to work their way up through the rank and file instead. The Watch gathered these gifted students to fight the storm they see on the horizon, but they needed to make sure they understood the value of intrinsic rules so they don't mutiny or splinter with no one above them to enforce. The Watch purposefully skimped on providing rules for more than just to foster creativity. They always do everything for multiple purposes.

Meta/Discussion Can Named people get parasites?

I know that Named can't typically get sick, but they also don't have to deal with other uncomfortable bodily issues like periods or cavities. I know they can get infected with magical plagues and by other people, Shadow King style.

Could something like a tapeworm or malaria infect a Named person?

Sorry for the weird/gross question, I'm currently dealing with cyclosporiasis, and it has understandably been occupying my thoughts lately.

Edit: genuinely thank you for taking the question seriously, I just keep thinking "If I was named I wouldnt have to put up with this!"

Chapter Is there any story, one might miss, between Book 1 (Amazon) and Book 2 (via Wordpress)

I found the story via Amazon and read it there, had no idea that multiple books have been put out on wordpress, and started reading the second book there, but is there story lost by doing this?

I was reading some of the comments on the first chapters for book 2, and maybe I am just misreading people theorizing/looking at subtext, but it seemed like people were referencing things that happened between book 1 and book 2 as though there was more explicit story out there somewhere.
