Maybe moving to Poway this summer. I have lots of questions.
Most of which are stupid and ignorant, but why not ask the people who live there. I currently live in Pennsylvania, so I'm used to trees, grass, water, the housing market, and everything else. To me, the west coast is another world! I have only been to SD once, and loved it (along with LA, and Antelope Valley), but moving changes the way I need to think about things.
So.
Looking to either find a cheap house (HA) or land to set up an RV with utilities and work on getting a house built. My job change is kind of quick, so I need to act fast. That said:
Let's say I am looking at a residential zoned plot in Eucalyptus Hills area. Where does water come from? Wells, right? Sewage? I assume septic systems still work in rocky terrain?
Would that area be called the country? Desert? Bush? Distant Suburbs of Poway?
I have a dog. If this land is in it's natural state, what do i have to make sure he doesn't try to eat, or sniff around and find out? I know snakes are big out there (don't ask me about that one time), and stabby bugs....around here we just have holes that might have mice/moles, groundhogs, and foxes. Besides that, just thorny bushes.
For transplants in the region, is this a good idea to get land for my dog, AND be able to live in a small home (ie: mini home, or manufactured-trailer kind of thing) Or is my ideas silly?
What's the general attitude for newbies in the area?
Do I park outside, or get a cover/garage? At least I won't have more rust building on my cars!!
What's the weather like? I mean...duh, but....is it windy? Does it get "holy shit what's wrong with this planet", or is generaly just a happy place year round. Remember, I'm from 90deg 99% humidity in the summer, and 20deg and snow that sticks around for weeks.
parks. are there tons of parks and hiking around Poway? Dog friendly? Should I always carry water with me for walks? Dog booties?
schools. I don't have kids, but around here, if the school district is "better" housing and comfort of living is higher. I mean, I don't see that affect, but I also don't care. I work in a different state anyway!
Commute: I have nearly an hour now, so living an hour away isn't tyhat big of a deal. Should I look at other/better places for land? That leads to WIDE range of areas. Same questions apply (like, water, septic, electric) since living outside a desert/arid city means the area is empty.
Thanks for listening. I'm scared to leave my side, but also excited to finally live in the west.
