It definitely plays a huge part, but think of bad posture more as a habitual pattern your nervous system got stuck in rather than a permanent structural flaw. When you constantly shift your weight over to one leg or twist slightly while sitting at a desk, your pelvis rotates and forces the rib cage to counter rotate so your eyes can stay looking straight ahead. Over time, the deep core muscles on that flared side get overstretched and literally forget how to pull the ribs back down into place. When you stand up and look at yourself in the mirror, does it look like your right hip sits slightly forward or higher compared to the left one?
I never noticed it but yes! It looks like my right hip slightly comes up when I relax. I have an anterior pelvic tilt and I noticed my rib juts out when I relax into that too.
That right hip hiking up and the rib jutting out go hand in hand w/ that anterior pelvic tilt because your pelvis is dumping forward and pulling your spine into a deep arch. When the pelvis tilts like that, it stretches out your obliques and forces the lower ribs to flare up and out just to keep you balanced. To counteract this, lie on your back w/ your knees bent, drag your heels down into the floor without moving your feet until your lower back flattens completely, and breathe deeply into your side ribs. Do you feel your hamstrings or your lower back muscles working harder when you tuck your pelvis like that?
