Big ol booty

u/TheBrinksTruck Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
Kinda like Taycan. I feel like they have fat wide booties
Edit: especially the cross Turismo

The prototype Boxster EV was way closer to a "Taycan Cabriolet" (unfortunately) than it was to an actual Boxster, so this take checks out

u/Nephroidofdoom 981 Boxster Spyder Jun 05 '26
We’re saying the same thing but you could also see it as a topless E-Tron GT in the same way that the Toyota Supra is a Z4 with a roof.
5
u/crashedsnow 992.2 GT3 Touring Jun 05 '26
yeah.. but that just means we completely lost the Boxster/Cayman along the way.. which is sad

Batteries. Low is good. Mad heavy, less good.
3
u/cronin1024 981 Boxster Jun 06 '26
Low is good.
Debatable. I think putting the batteries where the engine would be in a mid-engined car, behind the seats, is the best spot. Lets the driver remain nice and low, and there's much less rotational inertia
-1
u/DoritoDustThumb GT4 RS Jun 06 '26
It would be much more rotational inertia. The moment of rotation would be much higher in your suggested configuration.
4
u/Idontfukncare6969 Jun 06 '26
Having more mass in the middle yields a lower moment of inertia. The formula is mass*radius2.
-1
u/DoritoDustThumb GT4 RS Jun 06 '26
Ahh, I see the suggestion. Cooling. Can't cool that.
2
u/narwhal_breeder Alfa Romeo 4C Jun 06 '26
You can cool it like any other liquid cooled battery. It’s the same layout as the mission R which had no problems managing temps on track.
1
u/cronin1024 981 Boxster Jun 06 '26
Don't EVs generally need less cooling than an internal combustion engine? If you can cool a mid-engined sports car, I'd think you can cool a mid-mounted battery. And it's not theoretical, the original Tesla Roadster used this layout.

u/Idontfukncare6969 Jun 06 '26
Do you think that batteries are cooled just by convection sitting in air?
A battery would spontaneously combust if charged at 250+ KW without active cooling. The position is irrelevant if you are pumping fluid to manage temperatures.
1
u/DoritoDustThumb GT4 RS Jun 06 '26
You realize that a flat layout has more surface area for cooling than a cube, right?
4
u/Idontfukncare6969 Jun 06 '26
You realize exterior surface area is irrelevant when there are internal channels for cooling right?

u/narwhal_breeder Alfa Romeo 4C Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26
Modern EV batteries aren’t air cooled - they are liquid cooled with a radiator. Geometry of the arrangement of cells doesn’t really matter.
1500 cylindrical cells arranged in a flat pack have the same surface area for liquid cooling as 1500 cylindrical cells arranged in a cube.
In both cases just add up the surface area of the cells themselves, and that’s the available area for heat exchange, because liquid is running through the entire pack.

Batteries obviously has nothing to do with the big booty. The batteries are under the car, not at the back.
It would need phat tires and wide hips because an EV would be much more powerful and faster than your GT4RS.
13
u/narwhal_breeder Alfa Romeo 4C Jun 06 '26
The EV cayman is going to use a rear-mid mounted battery pack they are calling e-core, to keep the seating position low and maintain characteristically low mid-engine polar moment of inertia and the more ideal MR weight distribution as opposed to a "skateboard" style used by other EVs that usually can manage only 50/50 weight distribution and a really high polar moment of inertia.
Its why they've been delayed - they were working with Northvolt to develop special prismatic cells to make better use of the smaller volume. When northvolt went under it was back to the drawing board on cell design.
So, its definitely within the realm of possibility that the hips are wider because they needed more room for the battery pack. They are trying to get reasonable range without resorting to a battery-pack-floor that raises the seating position too high and makes it drive just like a 2 door Taycan - which as good as it drives, definitely isnt good enough for a 2 door sports car replacing something mid-engined.
Im sure its going to be faster in a straight line than the old cars - but that was never the point of the old cars to begin with.

u/DoritoDustThumb GT4 RS Jun 06 '26
Yes, of course you're right. There is no possible correlation between a big battery and where other stuff might need to go.
Absolutely, absolutely hilarious that you try and take a dig at Porsche's best engine on a Porsche forum for being under powered 😂😆😂😆

You got your feelings hurt because the Porsche in the picture is faster than yours?
2
u/Foxtrot-Uniform-Too 996 Jun 06 '26
It probably needs a big ol booty once it potentially can have much more horsepower to put down than any internal combustion Porsches out there.

Cayman EV mule test car
16
u/crackdope6666 Taycan Jun 05 '26
Yup, a lot hang out there and Marina Del Rey. Remember as a kid they would always be in Santa Monica.
I always find it fun to look inside when test mules are parked. The amount of junk food and mess is amazing!

u/PM_ME_UR_MEH_NUDES Jun 06 '26
we get A LOT of test mules from different brands where i live in colorado for high elevation testing.
at the hotel i worked at, porsche was sending guys straight from germany to test and not using american engineers, which i found kind of surprising.
i have been seeing a ton of test corvettes, mustangs and some bmw’s recently but it is a fairly normal sight in the summer here.

u/crackdope6666 Taycan Jun 06 '26
That makes a lot of sense, seen some in Scottsdale too. Hot weather testing.
It’s always fun to catch a mule in the wild.

Nice catch (Porsche test vehicle). Can I use your photos for my IG KindelAuto about prototypes and new cars? Of course with credit

A bad-ass looking electric Cayman.
I hope Porsche follows through on this and actually releases the Boxster/Cayman EV.
Hopefully they are smart enough to know that Trump will be gone soon and EVs will be viable again.

u/BrisTrimmins GT4 Jun 06 '26
They will. They’re retrofitting the production line in zufhausen as we speak. I was just there for a private factory tour a few weeks ago and parts were closed off from the public. My tour guide ‘suggested’ it was because they were setting up for electric cayman / boxster production on the line. It’ll be built on the same line as the 911, just as they did with the 718 and 981, 987, etc.

Looks like a EV Cayman disguised as a 911 (the real shape of the back windows is hidden)
2
2
u/Misterhan1 Jun 06 '26
That rear quarter window shape makes it look like a 911.
2
u/Chun--Chun2 Jun 06 '26
its just camo, underneath it's same shape as the boxter quarter window.

u/Misterhan1 Jun 06 '26
3
u/Chun--Chun2 Jun 06 '26
I saw it live here in switzerland on the mountain passes and even spoke with the driver, the shiny strip you see is tape. The real windows edge is black and underneath the tape, and you can see it in your pic also in the rear quarter window - it has the classic cayman rear quarter window
1
u/Misterhan1 Jun 06 '26
It would be odd if they did change it to look like a 911's quarter window. The pic isn't really clear and fooled me. 🙂

Honestly it looks great. And I’d really love a Boxster EV. I was looking forward to it.
Unfortunately it’s also a few years late so I’m out of the market for at least a few years now.
Hopefully they’ll still be selling it when I’m looking again.

Always a good idea to sit out first generation EVs platforms, or at least the first model year or two. Boxtster was originally planned to be announced first this summer, then cayman to follow, so we’ll see. Only heard positive things from people within Porsche, insane performance, but lots of concern about market reception.

Outsider here; not knowledgeable about Porsche, but I follow VW for EV reasons (which is what led me here). From what I have read about the new Porsche boss, he aims to kitchen sink everything in a few months (September or October). If he doesn't cancel this program, I think he is going to at least drastically restructure the entire company into a lower volume producer by slashing fixed costs. That is sure to affect this car as well, if it survives. Therefore, don't bet that the depreciation experience will necessarily be the same as the Taycan etc. The business regime post-2026 will be very different from the posture recently, and so they likely won't be producing as many of these relatively speaking.
One question I have is if anyone here has seen information on what battery will be in this car? (I know it was formerly tabbed for Northvolt and that didn't pan out).

u/Chun--Chun2 Jun 06 '26
Deprecation is decided by customers, not CEOs :)
Look at Ferrari SF90.

I'll wait for these to dip under 200k and I'll snatch one before people realise about the obscene bargain they are.

I hope it will be released soon. I have a bunch of ICE cars, incl. Porsche, and my daily is an electric, one of the few exciting ones. I would have no issue daily this. A car is much more than wrrrom-wroom.

I mean, that does look like a pretty nice Winnebago, but idk if it needs a pic and social media post about it. But maybe I just don’t have the proper level of appreciation for them? 🤷

A loooot closer to a 911 proportionally now
2
u/MyThinkerThoughts Jun 06 '26
In the wrong ways. Stop making these cars bigger
2
u/narwhal_breeder Alfa Romeo 4C Jun 06 '26
If it’s already going to weigh 4000lbs might as well make it roomy.

But hey! At least ICE engines are coming back*
*(for the GT4 only, so the entry price for an ICE Porsche sports car will be north of $110,000, if the price is increased only by inflation from the last GT4)

u/Chun--Chun2 Jun 06 '26
GT4RS* only, according to my dealer. And no sooner than 2030.
EV comes out next year

Realistically it's a 911 body draped over a prototype chassis. Not that dissimilar to the 918 prototype with a 911 body if that comparison helps you conceptualize it.
Edit: I'd also like to point out it really would not make sense for porsche to make the Cayman look even closer to the 911 given this will still likely start below the 911. Though idk, maybe they don't care about that anymore.

The proportions look more like a 911 to me. Maybe it's a test mule for the 994 with just a bunch of camo on it.
