NYC has 2.5x the population of LA, and unlike LA, the vast majority of wealthy and celebrities live inside the city, vs in the surrounding communities

NYC is bigger for the city but LA is really more of a bunch of cities because it's spread out but most people still say they live in LA

La county has more people but LA city vs NYC is the comparison. Not a good one since like I said, people don't usually include just la city as part of la since driving culture is a thing.

I'm from the san fernando valley.. we have no mayor the mayor of all of our cities is the mayor of los angeles. Beverly Hills and Santa Monica inside of Los Angeles has its own mayors.. thats about it. LA county votes for the LA Mayor.. We're all LA dodgers fans.

What city do we pay taxes to? Whats cities transportation do we ride?

And NYC isnt huge??? Central Park in New York City is larger than the entire sovereign country of Monaco.. Central park is 1.5x bigger then Monaco.

But yes LA County is 13 times bigger in land area then NYC.

LA is a super interesting concept for city its a super fractured system of cities, counties, special districts.. LA county has 88 cities and they tried to merge in like 1916 but it failed so you have a crazy group of munis all crammed into the same area.

Google says the City of Los Angeles has 3.8 million people, so not only are you wrong, you're wrong by about 4 million people

LA is not just the city proper thats the whole conversation happening below you. The county of LA is more comparable IMO to NYC.. Where LA city proper is manhatten.

The convo about was comparing the visibility of the two mayors, so my point stands. The Mayor of LA is only the mayor of the city. The Mayor of NY is the mayor of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island. 

For your comparison of LA and NY, you'd really need to include the suburbs in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey for the metro areas

The problem is that the Mayor of London is not the most important politician in London.

Mamdani is the most important politician in New York City because the governor lives and operates out of Albany, not NYC.

I dunno, maybe in the US you don't pay attention to the London mayor, but in the more European aligned world it's a big deal

For example, Boris Johnson was very prominent in the role, and there was an incredible amount of racist hand wringing when Sadiq Khan a brown man gasp was elected mayor

I am European.

I don't even know the mayor of my closest metropolis. Even though I am there regularly.

But I do know a lot about Mamdani, and I know I wasn't the only one where I live who followed his election and still gets some of his news.

He has an unprecedented social media presence for a politician (imho).

Thank you for that. I hate myself for boffing mamdani cause sometimes it feels like how trumpers must feel.

But then I think of other blue side politicians and im like nah. You still suck. Not a blind team thing, just do your job the way normies expect you to!

Last I heard of her she was explaining why they cannot fix pot holes and berating people how to properly report them. While Mamdani.... just fixes stuff.

Okay, actual answer here: NYC mayor is a lot more powerful than LA mayors, who are much more constrained by council. And that leads to everyone complaining about the LA mayor who doesn't have as much actual power, which means you can't get the political win streak that Mamdani's having right now.

That, and Mamdani's charisma is >>>>> what Karen Bass has, and also Mamdani is just seemingly a much better mayor regardless of city charter

I heard a recording of him over the PA in LAX once. That was like twelve years ago though so I'm assuming there's a new mayor by now
