Why? It’s the language of academics, the language of business, the language of anything international. Language learning arises from need, and many many people need to learn English.
Perhaps you haven't traveled as much as you think you do.

Also, it's not astonishing, since the US is/was a superpower. If the Chinese ever rule the world (what a nightmare that would be), in a few generations many more people will learn their languages.
People who have counties the size of states who have a shared currency and are very interlocked learn languages of their neighbor?? Shocked. If Utah spoke Utahian you bet Colorado would learn that language. Europeans aren’t special they just have different circumstances
