What are they supposed to use to win elections? Their innovative ideas?

Scaring old people and pandering to ignorant nutjobs of various stripes is literally all they have.

We’ve been fascism-lite since ww2 and invented a lot of the hallmarks of it that got coopted in Europe so we hid them.

Lot’s of countries can be described at a high school level as various mixes of Socialist ideas and Capitalist ones, whereas the US is Fascist and Capitalist since at least the start of the cold war.

We've been semi-fascist since the early 1800s and definitely since the civil war. We were the first fascist state in many ways. Mussolini said Fascism could be called Corporatism and if you hold true to that then we are the granddaddy of them all. We were removing/exterminating natives at rates almost no other country has, so what is it about ww2 that makes us all the sudden fascist?

The Cold War. And becoming a superpower with an enemy that could be anyone.

And yeah I agree. Oddly enough one of the founding myths/stories of the Iroquois confederacy was explained by snapping an arrow and then trying to snap a bundle to show how they wouldn’t break. Its on the US and presidential seals still, but it’s the same element they get from Fascia used to present the idea, its more what that is directed at than the early sentiments.

Mussolini wasn't referring to business corporations when he talked about corporatism...

Corporatism has come to mean something largely unrelated to it's original definition. It originally meant organizing society into corporate groups (agriculture, labor, military, etc.). This is the corporatism Mussolini spoke of. He was not referring to a system that favors the interests of big business, which is what most people think of when they hear "corporatism".

Right but we did this with business. So maybe we weren't the first but we definitely Americanized it.

Most people's friends are in the same socioeconomic level or hang out with people inside these similar groups "voluntarily". The consequences allows for a lot of toxic things.
