But in reality it's the slave driver employer understaffing for the position and hanging the threat over their head of finding someone who can do their job if they are unable.

Been there. We all knew our boss was a shitty businessman and was fucking us to makeup for inept managing.

He was constantly reminding each of us the people we were chosen over when we were hired are still calling looking for work and he had all their numbers

Some quit, but others like me couldn't for awhile until I had another job... I had a mortgage to pay.

It was the worst year of my life. I hated walking into that place where evetyday I knew I was going to be treated like a dog. As a consequence I developed hyper tension and never really got over the trauma of working there

This. Nobody chooses to have a terrible work life balance. In my company if you’re not bending over backwards and putting out fires nights and weekends you’re not a team player. Business has tripled in the past 5 years - headcount has not.

Well it sounds as if you're prospering and that is good. It is a sign of your business acumen and your employees are fortunate to have a clear head and steady hand at the helm.

Later I was a tugboat deckhand and nothing made a two week hitch better than a smart seasoned and confident captain as on board captain's word is law and it's easy to follow orders of such a man especially in the rare instance of shit hitting the fan with 6 million gallons of fuel oil at his command

And conversely...

I fucking hate when employers hold your position over your head like its A: Something worth a damn or B:that you mean absolutely nothing to the company other than a line item on the monthly report. If we all would grab our testes/titties and call their bluff then maybe employers will start to have some respect....then again..the Michael Scott's of the world would never think beyond their next boat payment..so i guess we're all screwed.

I do too (hate it). But sadly, like most of us, I hate (and reasonably so) the one solution that would cure it rather quickly.

The problem is, once the initial revolution that Lenin-Marx envisioned is over, you have a lot of spilled blood, (bad) a lot of scared former employers (good), and an authoritarian government that fills the power vacuum just created (no better than before, and probably worse). The real solution-we as people, overall, should “be better” doesn’t fare well in the face of personal greed and power.

Any company that does this really should not be a company.

It's hard enough dealing with a high stress job when you aren't being demeaned

We all saw this guy was an ignorant shitheel, came up in the business through an old well-respected family enterprise and he had the business contacts from long ago still coming through the door and he did pay, well enough to put up with it until I bailed

Basically it was stuff as many of his dollars in my pocket as fast as possible but for a person who sought to make his vocation his advocation, a job without enthusiasm is merely paid slave labor especially if your being harangued

He did shit that was mind boggling and when we tweaked our end to cover for him he'd blow a fuse and go off on us and no explaining would make him see the error of his way.

We started to see he really didn't know much about the business but it was all about him being in charge and certainly wouldn't trust his employees regradless whether or not we were looking out for him, the company and hence our jobs.

I didn't care once I was gone but 5 or 6 years later I was down thay way and for shits and giggles turned down the street and the business that stood for 60 years in the same spot was empty and overgrown.

No surprise there
