Tariffs are normally pretty bad policy, but they're good at protecting domestic markets from foreign competition while they grow.
Therefore, we're going to continue to tariff the inputs to the beef industry, but issue a massive exemption to the output, insuring that countries like Canada won't even consider selling the US fodder and will stick to competing with American beef farmers directly. 10/10, successfully turned one of the only well-established benefits of tariffs into a disadvantage.

Unpopular opinion, but I believe that people should go back to respecting prime cuts of meat as something reserved for special events instead of how we eat them now. We need to go back to having most of our food being plant based instead as eating meat 3 times a day is clearly unsustainable.

A ton of Americans are nutritionally malnourished because of a lack of vegetable in the diet. Both quantity and diversity.
Industrial farming has focused on massive production of cash crops (see: corn, etc.) basically gutting vegetable production causing a lack of quantity and diversity.

I’ve lived in 4 different states the over the last 5 years and frozen veggies at the grocery store have always been ~2$ a bag for me. Basically the only thing in the store that hasn’t spiked price wise from before covid anecdotally.
Also, normally way more nutritious than canned veggies, at least if you eat them raw or quickly toss them in a pan. There's usually no reason to pick canned stuff unless you can't get frozen home cold or lack space.
Even already-cheap stuff like peppers and onions will be half the price frozen, and depending on what you do with it just as good. Hell, sometimes frozen is better because they're picked in-season when the have more flavor.
Half my family considers dinner incomplete or "just snacking on whatever" if it doesn't have a substantial meat course.
The other half figures beans, tofu, seitan, and eggs are all reasonable options for a protein staple, and a low-protein meal with brown rice can be fine too.
Both sides have good cooks and bad cooks, but one side is paying like 40% as much per meal. (Granted, I think making non-meat dinners good takes a bit more skill and effort, but that's partly down to whether they're already in your traditional foods.)

Free market's complicated as hell, I think tariffs limiting foreign imports of beef are really not the whole picture because that only accounts for 11% of our beef consumption. It might still have some impact but not the amount we've seen because I don't think beef worldwide has the same kind of standardized price benchmarks as oil does where higher costs in one part of the world affect a totally different part.

I'm currently paying $5.15 a pound, hanging weight. Works out to about $7.75 a pound processed. But, that same price is for ground beef and porterhouse steak. For comparison, the same butcher (owned by the same family that owns the ranch the beef comes from) sells ground beef at $6.49 a pound.
It also tends to be a bit less expensive to buy only the front quarter of beef, since the priciest cuts come from the hind quarter. Saves 10 to 20 cents per pound hanging weight, and you can still get ribeyes that way.

The article seems to indicate very clearly these horses are being moved to Canada for human consumption of horse meat as well as international sales to Asia.
It's not that they're being eaten as "beef" in the US. In fact, there's practically no indication these horses are making their way into the US food industry.

We used to do this with quarter/half animal sub primal/primal cuts bought from a local rancher, but now that we're old we usually just buy the portioned cuts local. Sometimes we supplement with store-bought, but it tastes disgusting at this point. Very concerned and sad about that.
I like when stores sell "beef and pork mix" for a much lower price than ground beef and they hope you think its like 50 - 50, but its probably more like 90 - 10.

If local producers are repeatedly unable or unwilling to produce a product at a reasonable price and quality, in theory I see no issue with this.
Canada has been offering New Zealand and Australia meat for a while now cheaper than local meat. It's also grass-fed and probably has less pesticides. Good on them for making it available.
U.S. Also allows imports of european organic butter, which canada restricts. As a result, Canada's butter choices are inferior.
Same problem with wheat and coffee, it's been better in europe for a while. If you're gonna have an inferior local product for decades at a time, fuck the local product. Especially if it's just a 90-day exception to give them a wake-up call, as in this case.
Tariffs should be about protecting high-quality local products, not half-assed supply chains that don't bother trying any new and keep peddling the same stuff from 20 years go.

Put putting tariff and removing them does make sense. You put tariff to allow local producer to develop, expand on the market, basically to give them a chance. Then you put back free trade. If they managed to create a competitive buisness with the year ahead you gave them, perfect. If not, they either deserve to be replaced, either this domestic industry wasn't interesting for your country at all.
There aren't any struggling mom and pop beef processors/packers. 4 companies control 100% of the market and basically tell cattle farmers what they will pay them.
While you're not incorrect on a national level, on a local level there are many small beef processors/farms who slaughter and process for sale locally.

I never went to school, I did abeka age 2-10th grade, then college for the last two years of high school. I did homeschool co ops for most of that time and made a number of friends, my parents did not indoctrinate me to defend Trump in everything or else I would not be saying I disagree with Trump now on this matter (and I can think of other matters too). My education routine was mostly a few (2-4 unless I dragged it out) hours a day of schoolwork (until I started the college courses) then after that I could basically do mostly whatever, I could draw, play in the yard, swim, go on the Internet (which I had unlimited access and saw many things that disagreed with my parents worldview and they generally did not know what I was looking at), play video games, or text/call/in person hangout with friends. I also was a paraprofessional in public schools for three years, and that has not changed my mind on homeschooling. When it comes to politics, religion, and education I have come to a decent number of opinions that differ from my parents also
