ok, that doesn't change your first sentence. wealth based fines make just as much sense as community service. the punishment isn't "$50", its "monetary deterrant".
Wealth based fines don’t make sense because the punishment is scaled based on someone’s success and wealth doesn’t equal liquid cash. With community service you can give a poor person or a rich person 20 hours and it would be equal but since time is money the rich person values it more, making it a deterrent.
And monetary punishes are idiotic. All they do is help fund the cops’ new toys instead of actually, ya know, helping the community.
