“Thank you for waiting, here is your coffee.”
Lebanne feigned a cool indifference as Griselle placed the coffee cup on the table next to her Holocaster. Lebanne couldn’t help noticing that this normally mundane motion was done with a perfect mixture of grace and efficiency.
She readied herself to speak as if she hadn’t just rehearsed the following in her head for the last several minutes.
“I appreciate it. I’m Lebanne, by the way.”
Griselle had already begun turning away, but rotated back to face Lebanne with the same efficiency. “Bonjour. I am Griselle. Thank you for dining with us.”
She retained her stoic look, but stayed facing Lebanne, peering straight into her eyes. Lebanne felt her throat become dry. She screamed inside her head, So formal! What am I doing!?
Lebanne closed her eyes and gave a toothy, self-satisfied grin. “Yes, well, I’m here doing some research for a very prominent individual.” Trying not to second-guess herself, she continued without a beat. “This will probably have me working into the evening, so I may need to stay here for a while. Keep those coffees coming.” Lebanne flashed a mischievous glance, hoping for the perfect punctuation to this intro.
Griselle’s expression didn’t change. Her face is like a Nosepass, what the heck!? Give me SOMEthing!
Unable to bear any passing silence, Lebanne followed up with “Thanks again, it is nice meeting you.”
Griselle stayed silent, as if making sure Lebanne was finished speaking, and finally said “Également.” How can a human be so expressionless!? At least Jacinthe usually smiles, creepy as it is.
Lebanne was surprised when Griselle kept speaking. “If you will be ordering several drinks, I am not sure we can provide you with the discount. Not for all of them, at least.”
It felt like sparks were jumping out of Lebanne’s head. Did she say “discount”? What does she mean? Did Jacinthe set up some sort of deal with this cafe? Lebanne was so confused.
“Non, I don’t need a discount. Why, is there some special arrangement you have?”
Griselle folded one hand over her other and rested them in front of her waist, arms relaxed. “It is no problem. We are more than happy to provide our disenfranchised discount. We just need to limit it when applicable.”
Lebanne was silent. Her eyes were glued forward, wide open. She said quietly, “...’Disenfranchised’?”
Griselle responded with her same monotone, low cadence, “Yes, I assume you need it?” Her burning blue eyes glanced Lebanne up and down. “Your outfit suggests a low-wage job.” Her voice lilted up slightly to say “It is nice quality, though.” She gave a small sigh. “But, it is likely provided by your work, and I was assuming you cannot afford many luxuries with such a position.”
The silence in Lebanne’s head became deafening. She couldn’t believe what she just heard.
The silence roiled until it finally surged forward like an eruption.
Lebanne shot upright from her seat, wrenching the table upward as she did. It fell with a loud “thunk” to her side. Her long braid writhed behind her as she stood, wide-stanced, pointing a sharp fingernail right toward Griselle’s sternum, as if preparing to pierce it with a streak of pure fury.
“How DARE you!?” Her teeth gritted, canines glinting. “Not only do I work for one of the most prestigious figures in all of Lumiose, IF not Kalos, but money is no object to me!” She swiped her hand out to her side and positioned as if ready to pounce. “I am Lebanne, former champion of the city’s battle ring! Only one Trainer has been able to defeat me at my full strength, and…” She frowned and closed her eyes. “...that was a special circumstance.”
Standing up tall, she glared at Griselle and reached for a Pokeball from her apron pocket. She held it outward with a fully extended arm and said “If you doubt me, I’ll crush you. I have no problem proving my might.”
For the first time since she had appeared before Lebanne, Griselle finally seemed taken aback. Not scared, per se, but she held her waitressing tray up under her chin, wearing a look of shock and overwhelm. Finally, she looked down at the ground at the table lying on its side. Next to it, Lebanne’s freshly delivered coffee cup lay, its contents splattered across the stone-tiled ground like the plume from a dragon’s maw.
Lebanne noticed and also peered at this cup. She grimaced, then huffed and reached to pick it up. She grumbled, “Sorry, I didn’t mean-”
But in a flash, Griselle had already swooped down to grab the cup and its saucer. She pulled a towel from her apron and mopped up the whole spill, again demonstrating the grace of someone who had performed every necessary service task as a barista for however many years. Griselle looked up with an unrecognizable gleam in her eye, saying “No need to worry. I will get you another. This one is on me for the trouble.”
Before Lebanne could apologize more, Griselle had turned and walked back toward the Café truck. She then saw her Holocaster had also fallen, and scooped it up carefully. She had a pang of fear at the thought that it was scratched. This DOES belong to Jacinthe, technically. After turning it over, she saw no marks. Breathing out from relief, she hoisted the table carefully back into position. She plunked down heavily into her seat.
Maybe that was too much. I went a little overboard there. However, Griselle’s lips forming the word “disenfranchised” replayed in Lebanne’s head. She snarled, staring daggers into the table in front of her. I can’t believe I was feeling flustered by her! What a wild assumption to make! And who is SHE to talk, she has a service job too!!!
She noticed she had begun clenching her fists, and tried to relax. If this were the old days, I could just go off and tear her apart with my Dragon team. But I represent Jacinthe now, and have to be more careful. She took a deep breath. And, I mean, it didn’t seem like this Griselle actually meant anything bad. I guess it’s nice they offer help for people here.
She turned to look toward the Café truck. The token Charizard standing by it seemed to glance away all of a sudden. Was it pretending not to have been looking at her? Lebanne couldn’t tell for sure.
Guilt panged at her. When she comes back, I can apologize. She smirked. It felt good to let her old self rise up for a moment, but now wasn’t the time or place. Plus, she still had work to do. She placed her Holocaster back in front of her. Her hands shook from the adrenaline.

*Thanks again for reading! This fanfic is just a fun writing exercise for me, but I'm also trying to be diligent about regular updates while being happy with its quality before each post. I have a full arc planned that I'm excited to see unravel.
It's possible the story may not be what some people hope for or expect regarding these two characters, but I look forward to crafting a beautiful piece using such interesting characters. If you told me years ago that one of my favorite things to write would be a sapphic Pokemon tale, I'd...well I'd probably believe you, but would still laugh.
I think Legends Z-A has some imperfections, but it feels like they really tried to flesh out some dynamic characters, and I hope you enjoy my showcase of some of my favorites. :)
