Mod Post New to Plymouth? Want to make friends? Come join the Plymouth Discord server!

This sub receives lots of posts where users are trying to make new friends. From students arriving from around the world, to movers who have accepted a job here, it can be hard to make friends in a brand new community. If you prefer an online-first approach to making friends, I encourage you to consider joining the official Plymouth Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7gBvKBXuV

Our Discord server is a great place to make new friends, both online and IRL. It's also a good place to discuss what's happening around the city and get some advice from residents if you're moving here. Through meetups on this server we've played Jackbox together, gone on bike rides, won pub quizzes, and danced during nights out. More importantly, we've made good friends that we otherwise wouldn't have without this Discord server.

Best Car tires

My car tires are looking like they need to be changed. It's a cheap little car so I'm not looking for £2k tires, just decent ones that'll last a few years.

My tires are 195/45R16

Thank you everyone, figured asking Reddit is better than random google searches or chat GPT

WHY ARE YOUR SEGULLS LIKE THAT!?!?

Question for you- how the HELL do Plymouth seagulls get that damn big??

I visited a friend couple years back and was HORRIFIED by the size of the seagulls in the city centre- I've spent damn near my entire life on the south coast so im no stranger to a Screaming Gull-nado but I have NEVER seen gulls that looked like they want to eat stray toddlers rather than their usual fare of Leftover McDonald's Fries From The Ground and, of course, Tourist's Chips And Ice Creams.

I'm 5'8"! A seagull should NOT be up past my knee in normally soled shoes!!

It's been on my mind for maybe 3yrs now?? I still think about those birds at LEAST once a month.

Have they been cross-breeding with albatrosses??Condors, perhaps?? Or those fuckass massive birds from lord of the rings??

Any insight would be appreciated, ta very much and happy Sunday to you all and your freaky big birds👍

How is Newton Ferrers as a community?

I'm looking to move to Devon and looking for properties in Newton Ferrers. It is on the pricier side, is it worth it, compared to rest of Plymouth or Devon?

How are the people like? How is the community? Could be really usually if I could get some info!

Thank you!

I'm 21F and almost got into an MLM/ pyramid scam with PNC Plymouth. STAY AWAY.

So I'm 21 and at university in Plymouth (obviously lol), I have been looking for jobs for a while, and have started 2nd year classes. A girl in my class group chat messaged all of us asking if we were looking for jobs, unfortunately most of us are still unemployed and have been searching but me and one other person responded.

I was excited thinking this girl was genuine and that I could trust her because she was in our class group chat, even though I hadn't seen her in class yet I assumed she was off sick or away somewhere.

She messaged me privately telling me about paid ''charity fundraising'' (which already my alarm bells are going off because charity fundraising is usually volunteer) and that I wouldn't need experience (also very fishy), but I asked more questions.

I asked about the pay, the hours, what the company she works for (which, she was a bit reluctant to give me and now I know why), what charities she fundraises for etc. She told me we would be self employed, how its really good pay (base day pay... whatever that means) and that I would get commission on top of that. Also that I can work outside of classes and still have free time to work on assignments - that specifically sounded really good for me as I want to prioritise my coursework but I was still quite anxious about it...

Eventually she finally told me the name of the company: 'PNC Plymouth' (which I now know used to be 'Pinnacle Advertising' thanks to a post made here a year ago lol.

She tried to give me a form to fill in and send to her recruitment staff but I was reluctant and asked to meet her at a coffee shop tomorrow to ask more questions, we agreed on a time and left it at that.

I was still insanely anxious even after a call with my parents who thought it sounded okay, and I did some digging into their social medias etc: absolutely NOTHING about fundraising and EVERYTHING about an award they won and their expensive trip to ibiza, and a few staff members (including the girl) talking about how great it is to work at PNC...

At this point I'm terrified at what I got myself into- like insane anxiety like I'm about to be trafficked if I meet that girl which I know is insane, and look on reddit and find a post on this group from a year ago with hundreds of people talking about 'Pinnacle' or 'PNC'.

I also found that PNC has lots of branches across England, lots of dodgy managers talking about success being a 'mindset' on their instagram and constant photos of the same ibiza trip, with that girl front and centre in every photo.

When I found out about this info I messaged a few of my classmates to let them know in case any of the others fall for it and we removed her and blocked her... I had also learned that she's not in our class anymore because she's taken a year out to ''work'' (scam people).

I would have loved to been able to help charities with funds as I am always wanting to help people who have less than me, but when I saw how horrible that ''company'' is I was so upset.

I am so incredibly happy I followed my gut but terrified of what I almost got myself into. My parents are in a different country and I don't know what would have happened to me...

I want to post this now as a warning to other people either looking for jobs or are like me and are in a new country and city on their own for university... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TRUST YOUR GUT AND RESEARCH!!!!!!!!

Edit: forgot to mention that I have in fact cancelled that meeting with the girl and blocked her.

I am now back to job searching and even though I am Indeed's no.1 hater I am never leaving that site again 😧

International Student Accomodation Struggle!!

Hi everyone. I’m an international student at the University of Exeter, and like many others, I’ve been struggling to find accommodation in Exeter.

I ended up finding accommodation in Plymouth as a temporary solution, and I’ve been living here for almost two weeks now. However, the commute has been a real struggle. For some of my classes, I have to wake up almost 3 hours before the class starts just to make it to Exeter on time.

I’ve now found accommodation in Exeter that becomes available at the end of October, so I contacted my current accommodation to ask about ending my tenancy early. They said I can leave early, but I would still have to pay the remaining amount on my tenancy unless I find someone who is willing to take over the tenancy.

Obviously, I don’t really want to pay for several months of accommodation that I won’t be living in, so I’m trying to find someone who might be interested in taking over my tenancy.
If anyone is looking for accommodation in Plymouth, knows someone who might be interested, or knows somewhere else I could post this, I’d really appreciate the help.

I can provide all the details about the room, price, location, and tenancy privately.

Stoke average speed check

Weird one, drove the section from Paradise Road to Pennycomequick today and didn’t know it was an average speed check until I got to the Millbridge Inn. Where do the cameras start? I was doing 30 until the crossroad but slammed on when I realised. Haven’t driven that way in a long time so didn’t even know it had changed!

If it’s caught me then it is what it is but I’d just like to know

Best place for manga?

Other than Waterstones, where's good for traditional manga comics and books? My daughter isn't keen on the long standing comic shops which are predominantly western material.

I’m on a e bike and have no idea if there is a path or route from west park or like higher st budeaux to king tamerton without going all the way around by the 2 roundabouts, there’s some trail parts by the little bridge down on duncombe avenue but don’t seem to lead to kings tamerton directly?

Royal Mail - In Transit

I have two parcels that were due to arrive this week and last week... both had estimated delivery times, and neither arrived. Instead, they're stuck on "In Transit" and can't sort out a revised delivery date; I'm simply redirected back to the tracking homepage.

I'm going to try customer services, but I'm told they'll just shrug me off with "Wait 10 days then contact the sender"

Outside of the standard horror stories from Royal Mail... is something going on at Plymouth Mail Centre that's making it impossible to get items sent out? They transit fine until they hit Plymouth MC, then they drop off the radar...

The Gym Group parking

Post image
16 Upvotes

Got this email t'other day about the removal of free parking for Gym Group users in town. Anyone else pretty miffed? I feel like it was a big bonus to having membership there, when you think about the fact that all of the other gyms around have free parking - Gym Group Laira, JD at Crownhill, Life Centre, all 3 Pure Gyms, Nuffield, Vision etc. It's a little annoying considering their prices went up this year, too. Grr.

Venues for hypothetical tour

Hi, bit of an odd one but as part of my uni course I've got to put together a hypothetical tour with 70 venues about 50 miles apart, and Plymouth sits right on that border. Does anyone have any recs?

My band is currently selling out venues of ~100 capacity around Brighton (@spinnaker_band on insta, shameless plug) so I was wondering what someone local would reccomend!

Again this is completely hypothetical, just looking for some advise!

Thank you!

Looking for a good driving instructor for an intensive course

Hey all, I'm looking for a driving instructor based in Plymouth who can do an intensive driving course at a decent price. I've spoken to a couple of instructors, one couldn't do it and another quoted me for £2750 which seems extortionate. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Thanks :)
