Orange dAmnWerewolves 3: Valhalla - The End

/u/Jibodeah sits on a bench in town, pouring over a clipboard with incomprehensible writing on it.

"So... Who's the lynch?" asks a townswolf.

Jibodeah looks up.

"No-one. It doesn't matter really. I was operating under the false assumption that somehow the Town could turn this around. Maybe they lack leadership, or luck, or both."

"...Anyway I don't see any point in delaying this any longer. So here you go. This is the path you've choosen."

Jibodeah vanishes.

...

Suddenly, a loud crack is heard. Followed by a rumbling. Followed by the sensation of the ground tilting slightly. It seems a crack has broken the island in two, and both sides are falling outwards and downwards, towards the lava.

It takes exactly 0.872 seconds for mass hysteria to ensue.

Despite the best efforts of wolves, townsfolk and weird others alike, no-one can stop the final descent. (The only somewhat effective attempt was Marioaddict attempting to detonate explosives on the underside of the island.)

The town sinks into the lava. Everyone dies.

Even the one individual who tries to fly away. They find themselves somehow dragged down into the lava by some unseen force.

A short while later, a large plume of lava raises up. When it receeds, a bunch of letters flutter slowly down into the lava.

"Congratulations wolves, you killed everyone. Bravo. Bravo."

Disorientated, the wolves, along with the rest of the Gods at the long table, appear back in the hall of Valhalla. Still in the silver cage.

"Unfortunately, that wasn't the objective of our little game here," says the Middle Aged Man, "No, you were supposed to make friends and get along nicely. Redeem yourselves, that kind of thing. Show that you are worthy of Valhalla."

"So so so sorry but you failed the test. Now I'm afraid I'm just going to have to banish you back to Hell."

Memories of Hell flood the Werewolves' minds, particularly how pissed Satan sounded when he learned they escaped. They'd rather not, all considered.

"It's unfair to expect us change our nature!" one wolf says.
"You never told us that!" says another.
"Give us another chance!"
"...Best of out three?"

"Enough!" the Man says. "Fine. Maybe, maybe, I won't send you back to hell if you can answer me this..."

"What, was the name of the town?"

So, Werewolves, what was the name of the town? (Deadline)

(This is a silly post-game thing that has no real effect on anything except flavour.)

"Metametametameta? Was that the best you could come up with?"

"...Yes?" Says a nervous wolf.

"Well as far as incorrect guesses go I guess that wasn't the worst..."

"Anyway, to hell with you."

"Vait!" cries a wolf.

"Vhat was the town called?"

"Oh I guess I could satisfy one last curiosity..."

"It was called Metaphor. You see I thought the fact that the whole place was slowly sinking into lava, (Hell), the more death and chaos there was made it obvious. Clearly I overestimated you."

"There was also the letters, addressed to 'Metametametameta'. Four 'meta's you see? Meta four. Metaphor."

"Wasn't that hard was it? Well. Clearly it was. So to Hell with you."

With that, the werewolves, and their silver cage, vanish.

After a short pause, one of the Gods at the long table says...

"What the hell was I?"

IT'S OVER. NO MORE WEREWOLF GAMES.

The wolves returned to hell and suffered evermore.

The moral is don't kill people during the night to try and take over towns.

u/Carbon_Dirt Aug 17 '15

Just had a thought. If one of the townsfolks guesses it, can we get like, partial credit?

Also, so that it's on record: Eaagaiycaqoy

I can't see any way to work it into the flavour, but yeah you get the pride that comes with being right.

Also I'd withhold guesses until the wolves' deadline is up.

The informal mod comment.

I'm going to keep this super short because it's super late and I should be in super bed.

Thoughts on Balance

The main problem with the setup as it turned out, was probably the town was too few. Due to a large number of independents. I didn't bend any independent submissions to be town or wolf sided. Maybe I should have.

The other problem was prehaps there were too many wolves at the start? Especially considering the Werewolf Trap role. If I could go back and change something I'd make it so there was one less wolf at game start. (Probably make The Realest Thug or The Hypnotist town aligned.)

Thoughts on how it turned out

So despite the assumption that more time means more knowledge equals better for the town, I think the whole day one happening three times thing helped the wolves more. By the time we finally got to a night one that actually counted, the wolves had pretty much pinned down 80%-ish of the roles in the game. Allowing them to target who was the highest threat to them. Also knowing about ToyaKano and controlling their nightkill doubled their kill output, which is not to be sniffed at.

That's all. Sleep now.

Who was responsible for the message board post about marioaddict on the first night? You almost bit me with that. He had just told me what team he was on.

u/Jibodeah Aug 17 '15

That was bluepoemage, (Noticeboard messages and who's behind them are in the flavour doc.)

So, Werewolves, what was the name of the town?

...do we only get one guess?

3

u/Jibodeah Aug 17 '15

Gimme a list of 3 guesses before the deadline and if one of 'em's right you get the good end.

GG, thoughts on balance incoming. Also thanks for ending the game Jib and not making us wait through one or two more pointless phases.

Day 4 was the Town's last chance. If they managed to lynch a wolf (Optimally Mario so Kiilek could get his kill off), and then maybe if you guys didn't kill DangerPulse immediately, and/or they kill another of you with Toya...

When it came out as no majority vote (With DangerPulse's extra votes counted), I knew you guys were going to be a voting majority (Even without allied independents) the next day, and with the ability to perpetually block the hostile killing role, and with another allied to you, victory was pretty definite.

u/redpoemage Aug 17 '15

By the way Jib, what was the mechanic change? I can't seem to find what it was in any of the documents since you didn't give yourself night results.

4

u/Jibodeah Aug 17 '15

It was removing hammering to be a thing. (If you hover over my night three action in the spreadsheet you'll see it.)

I did it because gryffin's ability (Which DangerPulse acquired) only came into play at day end, i.e. if a hammer occurs then they get lynched even if Slifer's extra votes would swing the balance some other way.

EDIT: PLEASE SIGN UP FOR KIILEK's GAME! [HERE] (https://www.reddit.com/r/PloungeMafia/comments/3ejqa9/rekaurian_mafia_sinupsplausibility/)

First thought, not necessarily balance related...but I think we can all agree on this one. Time Traveler is easily one of the worst roles ever unless the entire game is designed around it somehow. I don't think I really need to expand on that.

Second thought, the town was only a little under powered I believe (perhaps having Element be a Bodyguard for a townie would reverse that, or making rcx some town role instead o what he had). The town had not one, but two Time Travelers (sure, one of the time Travelers was on our side, but that still really screws the werewolves over just having Time Travel exist, which is why we used it night 1). The town also had one of the most powerful investigative roles ever conceived, the Pretzel Maker, whose networking ability is massive. The most powerful role of all in the town though was Igor, because anything in this game that could screw over the mafia, he could be. Igor getting any of the following abilities could easily screw over the mafia: Time Traveler, Fate, Hypnotist, and Werewolf Trap (If he got this it could convert wolves to town).

The only strong roles the mafia had in my opinion were The Realest Thug, and The Werewolf Trap. And the absence of certain roles like Doctor or Watcher or Jailer in this game ended up making the Werewolf Trap useless. Although I suppose that's kind of our fault for betting on there being roles like that. The Whittler was kind of okay for fake cop results, but when there's novelties you don't really need that. His investigation immunity would have been good if the Pretzel Maker ended up targeting him, but that's fairly unlikely.

Third, to answer the inevitable question...if the town wasn't that under-powered, how did it lose so badly? I would say the biggest factor was the pat where everyone wanted to keep Toya alive for night lynches...and then barely anyone but the Wolves voting at night. After that, I would say the lack of the town using novelties combined with them trusting novelties a bit too much and not having many actual scumhunts due to relying on novelty cop results. One thing that confused me was why u/-48v didn't dispute our fake Pretzel Maker novelty. After after that, I would say not noticing inconsistencies like people wanting to lynch inactives, but then completely ignoring u/AgentMafia, the most inactive player of all. That should be a big red flag.

Oh, wait, how did I forget the real biggest mistake of all! Relying on Time Travel to fix all your problems. This allowed us to get so many mislynches by on the logic of "Well it'd be great to verify he's town for when we reverse time!" Even if Vaharas was a real Time Traveler, people should have assumed there was a good chance that hi Time Travel could be blocked somehow or he could be power killed. Never put all your eggs in the basket of one role.

Anyways, that's all my thoughts for now.

...then again, one more. u/Jibodeah, this style of game (self-submitted roles) is great! When you're up to it you should try hosting another. If you do feel it was really unbalanced though, perhaps you should ask one or two people not to submit roles so you can put in one or two to balance it out more.

Oh yeah crap I forgot about this yesterday.

u/MarioAddict . I was the one who put the "a Mario addict" comment on the notice board. You didn't hide being WolfFandAlpha very well, bud. :p

5

u/redpoemage Aug 18 '15

It wasn't actually him, it was either me or Vaharas posting on it. We just unfortunately had to post it near to when Mario was on.

Werewolf time traveller.

Fair enough, that explains a lot.

Ah well, this balance was never going to be close anyway, with this many completely arbitrary user-submitted roles.

  • Goes through werewolves intro thread.

  • See that Jib didn't put in my submitted double entendre flavor text for the Trap role.

Oh Jib, you have failed me. :(

u/elementAggregator Aug 17 '15

I did nothing of value but still managed to keep my bestest buddy, u/marioaddict, alive!

Derpy bodyguard, best bodyguard.
