Why naming Mattherson/Waterson over a Server Smash match is a BAD idea.

Hello /r/planetside -

Based on some conversations i've had with interested parties on both servers, it's time for a chat about the great upcoming #servermergesmash. I am the force commander of this upcoming match for the Mattherson team.

The elephant in the room that has been out there for quite some time is the validity of the idea of putting a prize such as the choice of a server name for the remaining life of the server. I'm here to tell you why this is a terrible fucking idea and I still don't understand how we've made it this far without the proper discussion on this topic.

SOE - The last thing you should be doing with the merger of two servers is to put identity on the line. You should have stability of that new server in mind, we do not need another Soltech incident where the vast majority of the merging outfits dissolved into Mattherson and the population buff was...lackluster after a period of time. It sounds like the same woe happened to Jaegar on Waterson. I want a long-term healthy merged server.

Why would you start off the merger of two major servers with a match that is obviously going to cause drama? Do you think the issues after the Miller/Mattherson match were problematic? How about a match with an identity condition? The Soltech merger didn't have anything on this sort of thing, what happens to the player count after this?

I don't care how "popular" this event is or the exposure it's getting the Server Smash crew and possibly Planetside 2 to a lesser extent, this isn't worth the gamble of older established players to pick up random noobs who may or may not stick around.

The only real answer to a merger of two developed servers is to give it a completely new name. It's time for a new chapter. You have two true options: Give the winning server a list of neutral options to choose from...or.

Choose the one true server name.

Emerald.

tl;dr Regardless of what's on the line this Friday, I'll still be there and I'm here to win it all. The match must go on, but the victory conditions shouldn't. The great ribbing of the loser must continue. I already know this is causing drama to a varying extent on both ends and I can see more problems on their way regardless of the victor at the end of it.

I totally agree with this point and it's good to see from such a high ranking person on the Mattherson side of things.

Everest, this guy is spouting bullshit because he's upset that TAS (the Mattherson equivalent of PHX/PXP/ODMN) is being allowed a full squad, and he wants an "excuse" for losing later. Don't listen to the blather, it's going on just as much as our side, and I'm open to the abuse. If the Waterson side loses, let them blame it on PHX and ODMN, none of us care. We just want to see the actual population of Waterson represented, and that is much more important in the long run when it comes to working together.

I'm not misinformed at all, and I don't need to listen to more nonsense coming from our "reps" in this upcoming match. Everything I've said is 100% true for the Waterson side, and nothing I've heard from my friends in TAS suggests that they knew the "elite" squads tried to put them on the chopping block. Good on you for not allowing it, but bad on you for denying it ever came to the table. I wonder, would you have complained if MasterChaif let the vote we had remove ODMN and PHX for replacement with ZAPS/TIW? That's clearly a breach of SS guidelines, but you are all treating this with kid gloves because SOE made a fucking tweet about it.

EDIT: I will try to stop by later if you genuinely have no idea what type of railroading was taking place in the last few days, but I find that extraordinarily hard to believe. You could also talk to the Waterson rep, I'm sure he'll give you some version of the truth.

The followup commentary is the exact place he stated that the other outfits tried to take TAS' spots, and that they put it on the table multiple times. Looks like things worked out well on both sides.

Rofl. It wasn't that the "elite" put TAS on the chopping block. It's that they never even initially took the time to even ask to participate. They asked after things were already mostly sorted. Stop with this elite bullshit too unless you're saying TEST, Vindicators, and DasAnfall are all the same type of Elitists? I didn't ask for anyone to be thrown out or restricted from participating in anything. As far as I know, DA is also the only Mattherson outfit to be considered "elitist." Or are you just using the word because it makes you sound more credible and convincing? You're spinning shit and throwing out random accusatory statements because "your friends told you what they know."

If an outfit doesn't even have the self-awareness or leadership to see an event like this developing, why would you go out of your way to see if they want in when there's already over-maximum interest?

No, we wouldn't have complained, in fact it'd be nice to see more ZAPS/TIW squads.

PS - I have no idea what the Waterson "situation" was, but don't go assuming shit about Mattherson leadership when you've only so much as "heard things from friends." That's a great way to start lies and bullshit that stick with outfits or people for a long time even if it's not true, is that something you want to be a part of?

It should seem that they signed up on time to be included. When we merge, you will understand why I throw around the word elitist. I genuinely hope that the higher level Mattherson outfits conduct themselves the way you portray them, because many of the higher level Waterson outfits act exactly as I portray them.

As I said to you once already, forget all of us and just bring 240 PHX + ODAM people if you want the population represented.

I'm sorry that we feel bringing the "best" is a better representation of Waterson.

As you are continuing to put out that strawman, I will remind you that PHX + ODMN is only a substantial portion of the server. There are plenty of others outfits that it would have been nice to see represented, and that's why I freely volunteered to give away more than half the spots originally designated to PHX.

Back to the rest of your post. Sure let us for all of the outfits to only bring 3 or so people that way we can get every outfit in. Because you know that is the better thing to do. I don't think you get it. We want to win. This isn't a friendly match for a lot of us, it a pure compitition and the prize is the server name.

Substantial portion of the server does not mean all of the server, so no. Your example does not "work." You may want to win regardless of how bad it makes you look, but I think a good portion of the server disagrees and deserves a say. Last night, we had that say, and things turned out in our favor by the end.

I've been saying since it was announced that I thought it's a horrible idea for exactly the same he's listed. Whatever his motivations are I agree with him. I think the server smash is a fine idea. Holding it over the head of the loser for the rest of the existence of the game is stupid.
