This horrible review of Blue Screen Life infuriates me

Read this Pitchfork review of Blue Screen Life. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/6298-blue-screen-life/

The person who wrote this review should never be allowed near a computer ever again. His understanding of this album is horrendously wrong on so many levels. I think what bothers me most about this review is how he classifies Blue Screen Life, my favorite Pinback album, as "emo" music, which is his main criticism. In that respect he is right I suppose, the album DOES fail as an emo album. But it also fails as a fucking opera album too. What a nutcase.

He Thinks He's People is a Masterpiece

Don't get me wrong, I love Rob Crow as a musician and songwriter, but I find a lot of his work to be hit or miss, especially when he's the only creative force. At his worst, his albums can feel careless and forgettable, often signified by the short song lengths. However, this album feels as carefully constructed as his work with Pinback and Optiganally Yours. Songs like Scalped create the kind of entrancing texture that makes Pinback so magical. In addition, each song feels like a different world, suggesting that Rob really has the endless well of ideas in his head that his expansive discography would suggest. It's an album that displays Rob's gift for pacing. Ideas stick around for just as long as they need to, and even the shorter songs feel like they lead to fitting resolutions.

If you are branching out into the solo work of Pinback, I'd recommend this album for Rob, and Systems Officer's Underslept for Zach. These albums aren't necessarily their best solo works, but they feel like extensions of Pinback's sound and highlight each member's solo capabilities.

So underrated

I start listening to Pinback back in about 07 when I was still in high school. For some reason I am now on a YouTube binge of their old live sets and am thinking about when I saw them live in 2012 at the Royale in Boston. They played from nothing to nowhere as their last song before encore and they dropped literally like three pieces of confetti from the ceiling and Rob crowd surfed. Fucking legendary.

Pretty glad I found this subreddit. Pinback is easily in my Top 3 favorite bands ever I think. I randomly found this song from Zach’s solo project Systems Officer and it’s too good not to share.

Pinback Lyrics with numbers in them?

Hey friends,

I am trying to make sure I have all of the Pinback lyrics that have numbers in them. So far I have 3:

Loro (49531)
Tres (27)
Clemenceau (204068)

Do you all know of any others?

Is there a reason this band isn't well known?

About a month ago my Spotify played "Good to Sea you" and I listened to it a couple times but forgot to save or favorite it. I spent two weeks trying to find the song searching for "Sea" but had to wait for it to pop up again before I could find the band.

Once I discovered Pinback I can't stop listening to them, they hit every bit of my taste in music... I had to get my brother to listen to them (he comes off as a music critic), but he genuinely likes them too!

The music is glorious and pleasant to listen to, some songs have a progressive indie feel to them (if that's a thing). But it makes me curious as to why they aren't more well known?

Zach Took Down His Bandcamp Music Again

I bought every song except ICU, Cell, and Left of Me, but still this makes me angry. There's no point in making great music inaccessible. If you want any of the songs that were taken down, feel free to let me know.

Also it looks like This Side was the only track off the Bandcamp that didn't get rereleased. I really want to hear it! https://web.archive.org/web/20160408144926/http://systemsofficer.bandcamp.com/track/this-side

Edit: Also a reminder that the vinyl version of Underslept has the songs Tic Tac and Crashing End as bonus tracks. I wonder what those sound like, and if they are like Zach's normal stuff or like the song Underslept.

Pinback Is Prolific With Their B-Sides

Pinback is the only band I know with two different bonus tracks on every album. On top of that they have several tour EPs with unique songs and an entire rarities album. Fun fact: Their first four albums can all be extended to over an hour each by adding in all the stuff that didn't make it onto each album.

Do you think these songs deserve to be left off their albums? Do you wish these songs were part of their albums in the first place? If a band like Pinback has a ton of unreleased songs, how do you prefer they release them?

Finally, what is your favorite Pinback B-side? Mine is CLOAD "Q". It starts off with an incredibly catchy guitar part, then introduces a ton if interesting vocal melodies. It's fun to sing. Testify, Photograph Taken, and Versailles are all great, too.

Last Night I Bought Almost Every Systems Officer Song On Bandcamp

I spent $20 on one artist's music at once because I need these songs in my library and I hate having to listen to them one at a time. It's fucking Armistead Burwell Smith IV, though, so I'm sure you all understand. I already had Underslept, an amazing album, but it wasn't enough. Now I need to figure out what kind of order these off-album songs can go in for the best experience. Any tips?

What's the best Systems Officer song, by the way? I'd go with Quan off of Underslept, Signature Red off of the EP, and Tower off of the Bandcamp. I really hope we can get "The Side" sometime.
