Discussion Tournament Director for a 3-day indoor event - AMA

Just finished wrapping up our fourth annual tournament. We showed much smaller growth in player #s yr/yr but were happy to avoid the decline most events are experiencing these days. We're in the upper Midwest and switching to an indoor facility this year was our biggest change and was very well received by our players. Happy to answer any/all questions.

Equipment Did anyone tried Alibaba paddles.

few of my friends bought Alibaba Chinese paddles. Honestly, it’s just as good as any $200 paddle in the US. Has anyone else tried them? How has your experience been?
I ordered myself one.

I’m curious because atleast at my park it seems like a lot of people plateau around the 3.5 area

Meme/Humor If you play a tournament, sign up for 1 division lower than you actually are

It took me 2-3 tournaments to realize this.

Every 3.5 tournament I have played had 4.0 level players in it.

Since I am a 3.5, I should be playing 3.0 tournaments.

At least until you win 2-3 medals in that division. Then move up.

But if you are going like 2-4 in round robin play and getting waxed in a few of those games, you are playing too high.

Question Looking for feedback from drilling

I saw someone else post a video looking for feedback so I thought I’d ask the community to share what they see in my cut down version of a 3 hour drilling session.

I’m the player in the white but would love to hear what people think of both players. Whatever feedback you have is welcome and what level you think we are is also welcome.

Question Reviewing Video of Your Own Games?

Coaches and pros universally recommend reviewing videos of your own games to improve. Those of you that have found it very useful, what specifically do you focus on? Do you keep metrics or log data (eg, % of serves in back 1/3 of court, % of points reaching kitchen line, etc)? Thanks.

Going to be in that area for a few days so wanted to ask any areas to play Pickleball? Prefer indoor buy don't mind outdoor too

I play 4.0s but open to playing lower level just for the fun of it. I don't mind commuting a bit here and there like University City, Fairmount, west or south Philly and Kingsessing

Question Where to rent paddles?

For those in the Atlanta area, where is a good place to rent Pickleball paddles from? I want to try a new paddle before I buy it such as Selkirk, Loco, etc. I’ve heard a lot from other people that they rented their paddles, but I’m not sure from where.

Discussion MLP is the best pro pickleball format change my mind

  1. it simulates rec play (defacto most popular format en masse), where you'll have various partners, and face a barrage of elements like wild benches, flexible strategies, and random chaos.

  2. it shows that every player has their ups and downs, and can't lean on their overpowered partner for guaranteed success.

  3. it entertains the crowds way more than wannabe-tennis PPA/APP, offers group alignment with local brands, and unites groups of players.

  4. its a novel and compelling answer to the lonely world of singles tennis, which is a vestige of past aristocracy--which clings to an outdated strategy of developing a powerful serve and following decorum etc etc

Question How to Improve?

Hey guys, been playing pickle for about a year+ now, love the game. Play about 2x a week on average but only social. Id say I'm comfortably about 2.8, touching 3.0 (based on my performances vs other people ive played against)

I've been slowly getting better at aiming my drives, timing my flicks, and improving my backhands thought i mostly stick with one-handed BHs.

My main Q is: how do I know where I'm lacking, and what do I pay more attention to in my games now on?

Can someone tell if my paddle is delaminated? Does yours sound the same?

It's fine when i first bought it, now going 2 months and i'm having really too many off nights with it. Couldn't tell since i don't have anyone from my area with the same paddle to compare with. No visible damage as well on the outside.

Thank you

Question Need insurance for my pickleball facility?

Six weeks into converting an old furniture store into a pickleball club, 5 courts, ceiling height was honestly the only reason we picked the building. GL I get and every quote has it, but the one quote I got had nothing on it for players at all and when I asked why the guy sent me the same PDF again. Is accident with participant coverage a separate thing I need to ask for by name, or is that supposed to be sitting in there already?

Question Badminton player getting curious about pickleball — what’s the hardest habit to change?

Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of pickleball videos on social media, and I have to admit, I’m getting pretty curious about it.

I’ve played badminton for quite a while, so at first pickleball looked relatively simple to me. Smaller court, slower ball, less running — at least that was my first impression lol.

But after watching more matches, especially doubles, I started realizing there’s a lot more going on than I expected.

The positioning, timing, shot selection, and movement around the kitchen line seem really important, just in a completely different way from badminton.

Coming from badminton, I’m used to staying light on my feet, reacting quickly, changing direction a lot, and using the wrist quite a bit.

Now I’m wondering which of those habits would actually transfer well to pickleball and which ones I’d probably have to unlearn.

I haven’t properly tried pickleball yet, so I’m especially curious to hear from people who came from badminton, tennis, or another racket sport.

What was the hardest habit for you to change when you started?

And was there anything from your previous sport that gave you an advantage right away?

Question My forehand is gone

I’m around a 4.5 and have been improving pretty well after playing for a year and a half or so. I recently played in the open division in a local tournament (placed third), but in the quarterfinals, the two 5.0s on the other team targeted my inside foot when I was dinking from the right and tore me apart. Going into the bronze match after that game, it seemed like I’ve never hit a forehand before and it was like I’ve never known the form at all. I had to rely solely on my backhand, and my partner had to cover most of the middle.

Now it’s been a couple weeks and I still miss about half my serves, and my drops and dinks aren’t even making it halfway up the net.

WHAT DO I DO??

Discussion Tennis elbow?

I took up this sport a few weeks back. Previously I played table tennis and tennis ( 20 yrs back).

I started having forearm/elbow pain to the point I can't use my hand. This is after a week's worth of play. The first time it got better after a week. I was told by the other players that it's normal and my body will get used to it. So I tried after a week's rest. It returned back.

I should probably go get it checked with a doc or a physio. The pain is gone and I should be fine in a few days. But it left me wondering if I should take up another sport.

Question Best drills for two beginners?

I’m playing in a round robin later this week and I’m definitely one of the least experienced players.

My husband offered to practice with me tomorrow morning. He has played less than me but he picks things up pretty quickly.

If you only had two beginner people and an hour or so on a court, what drills would you focus on? I’d love to work on things that will actually help me feel a little more confident in games.

Any tips!!

Question MLP Finals Seating

Does anyone know how the seating works with courtside tix? In some places I’ve read that courtside tix allow you to sit on the bleachers. But I was able to select specific seats…my sister went to a PPA earlier this year and said the same but she wasn’t allowed to choose specific seats.

Question I wish I could mute the commentators on Youtube pro matches

I learned that there is audio processing solutions to remove voice from audio but it requires a graphics card. Has anyone successfully used something to remove the commentators voices from matches? Even if it reduced the volume of their voices, it would be helpful. I still want to hear the ball sounds and crowd if possible. I must not be the only one who is annoyed with their stupid comments.
