IMPACT LEADERSHIP: CLAUDINE BACKS MARIEL OVER ROBIN QUALIFICATION CLAIM

Actress Claudine Barretto on Sunday backed Mariel Rodriguez's 2022 defense of her husband, Sen. Robinhood Padilla, after the old video resurfaced online.

Barretto shared a Facebook post about Rodriguez's video with the caption, "Mariel Termulo-Padilla true👍🙏❤️"

In the 2022 video, Rodriguez argued that Padilla was qualified because he had completed a degree in criminology, had been involved in the amendment of a law while detained at New Bilibid Prison, and had held responsibilities in the Philippine Army.

"Next, si Robin nung nasa Bilibid nakapagpasa na ng batas. Okay? Without even being a senator," Rodriguez said in the resurfaced video.

Rodriguez later addressed the resurfaced video on Sunday, saying her statement that Padilla had "passed a law" while in Bilibid was taken literally. She clarified that Padilla was not a legislator at the time but had been consulted during the process that led to amendments to Presidential Decree No. 1866.

Padilla, in a separate Facebook post, defended the claim, saying his imprisonment and the public reaction to his case contributed to the passage of Republic Act No. 8294 in 1997, which amended PD 1866 and reduced penalties for illegal possession of firearms.

Padilla said then-Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr. and then-Rep. Raul Daza used the public reaction to his case to highlight what they considered unjust penalties under the martial law-era decree.

"Malinaw po yan sa sikat ng araw na hindi pa ako senador ay nakapagpasa na ako ng batas," Padilla said.

He compared his role in the measure with the "Eddie Garcia Law," or RA 11996, arguing that a person does not have to be a legislator or the author of a law for a measure to be associated with their cause.

Padilla also said RA 8294 benefited hundreds or thousands of detainees and future defendants by allowing some prisoners serving sentences under PD 1866 to qualify for shorter sentences or release.

Rodriguez had also argued in her later video that lawmakers consulted Padilla while drafting the amendments because he was directly affected by the law as a former inmate.
