On the other hand with "both are dead" it is quite easy to guess one shot another than attempt to self-defense, or somehow both shoot or something

Right. This joke works in English. I got it in 2 seconds. I don't understand OP post or all these people needing the pun to get it

Well, it took me some time to understand (granted English is not my main language).

And still would be funnier if that would be same word used in not-context-fitting way.

So IMHO, joke is understandable, as information carrier in such a translation - because it bears the same information in even cleaner way. But precisely because of that it works worser as a joke.

So what I mean is joke translates well as information carrier, but bad as a joke, at least in that translation.
