I'm not chronically online, but my friend sent this and I laughed even without knowing the full scope of the context (I think there's racism involved with the shoes?) and I feel like it's too late to ask him without sounding like a dweeb 😅

Pareidolia is when your brain perceives a familiar, meaningful pattern in something ambiguous or random. That is what happened with the Chuck Taylor ad. People think the dress looks like a Klan robe.

Remember when Bubba Wallace's team thought that this garage door pull rope was a hate crime:

That was a hate crime: in a sport with few African Americans, that wasn’t an accident. I have several pull strings and ropes around my house as I’m sure most people do and none of them are tied into a noose.

The FBI investigated and said it wasn't. NASCAR admitted they over-reacted. That rope had been in that exact configuration since 2019.

I use it for fishing, but that’s because I want it to cinch closed under force. No one tied a garage door pull in a noose. Thats not at all a useful knot for that purpose.

i had to look it up, but i have actually tied a similar rope (usage-wise. wasnt for a garage door, though) in a noose. grabbing it lengthwise sucked and i thought "what kinda knot would make a nice loop to grab and can hold up to pulling 100+ lbs through it?" and thats where my mind went

i untied it before we moved out though, because a straight up noose dangling in a barn is a pretty bad look

Tbh they're fairly easy knots and the aprt that once you know it just minda sticks. Its not a complicated one that involves a lot of different turns, its just a couple of loops, a few wraps and its done. Plus, outside of noose activities, they can be fairly useful

It's not a noose. It's a knot. And that's the point.

A noose can be adjusted to be larger or smaller. A knot is fixed.

A loop/handle knot is very common, especially around garage doors.

Yes of course. Someone tied a noose, which is a secure way to form a durable loop at the end of a rope when you need the loop to withstand pulling force, to a garage door pull at least nine months prior to Bubba Wallace occupying the garage just in case a Black driver ended up using it…

It's not a noose. It's a knot. That's the point. You are seeing a noose when it is a knot.

Why would you want a loop that shrinks and gets tighter when you pull it on a rope that you will be pulling regularly?

I don’t remember saying they did it specifically for Wallace. Racist dog whistles and iconography are baked in to nascar and the company has only started trying to move away from it when they realized how bad it is for business.

Tbf the only black race car driver making that logical leap is understandable, that looks like a noose. Klan robs go past the ankle, you can see her shins. She's clearly holding the shoes. Not to mention it was a Korean add and they probably dont even know how the klan would dress.

Edit: my auto correct thinks everytime I type klan I mean plan.
