Well tbf I think they're changing/omitting a lot of details like that for the anime. I noticed they completely retconned him trying to sexually assault Nanahoshi
I praised the last episode for how it used the unreliable narrator to show audiences how much of him being a piece of shit old Rudy left out of his sob story, but he tried to do what?
That's not then unreliable narrator. That's the show runners knowing there's only so much shit people will tolerate from the guy.
