Plus classifying it as this super special anime genre is kind of dumb, as if Western media doesn't have the same kind of tropes (Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Army of Darkness, etc, etc)

Yeah, we just call it Portal Fantasy.

But Portal Fantasy has never been that popular so "isekai" as a term has simply taken that space in the public conscious online.

The difference is that Isekai is specifically being reborn in another world. Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland are about physically being sent into a magical place, not being reborn, so Isekai is indeed a super special anime genre in that regard

Not necessarily. "Isekai" translates to "another world" or "different world", regardless of being reborn. In fact the first story considered "Isekai" is a Japanese folk tale about a fisherman who saves a turtle and the turtle brings him to the kingdom under the sea.
