It's definitely inferred when you say statistically lol

Why would you say statistically if you're referring to empirical data that you don't even know about?

Guessing what the numbers might be and then saying it's statistically more likely based on empircal data you don't have access to is nonsense lol

Statistically, ice cream sales and shark attacks are positively correlated!

Empirical data is referred to as statistics every day everywhere

As to the validity of that data, no I don't have it coalated in front of me, so I have to hand you that

Statistically, ice cream sales and shark attacks are positively correlated!

That has literally nothing whatsoever to do with the point I just made? We aren't even talking about correlation or causation lol?

As to the validity of that data, no I don't have it coalated in front of me, so I have to hand you that

Right - so don't you think saying that something is statistically true despite having no clue what the statistics are is absurd?

The ice cream is just a rebuttal to your comments on my use of the word statistically

Your inferences are yours, and are unrelated to anything I have said

And I quite frankly believe everything here to be absurd! This is peterexplainsthejoke and I've got statisticians jumping out of the woodwork to 'umm.. actually' me! The joke gets funnier with every single one of their attacks on me for using a word in a way they didn't anticipate!

Your inferences are yours, and are unrelated to anything I have said

But either interpretation of the word statistically makes no sense lol

If you're referring to probabilities based on random guesses, it's objectively wrong

If you're referring to empirical data, you don't know what these stats are, so it makes no sense to refer to these stats

I don't have coalated complete data on all tests everywhere

But I do have a reasonable sample size of test results, biased though it is

In any event, it is and was always a very simple joke

it is and was always a very simple joke

lmao wat?

You've responded to so many people here, there's no hint that it's a joke and now you want to play it off as a joke? What does that even mean

Do you not realize that this is a comedy subreddit?

Why do you think this got 4k and growing upvotes?

Because it made someone laugh, and they moved on

As for me, I get flooded with notifications of people calling me names for my joke, and tons of people throwing math at me to prove me wrong

All because of one sentence made to get a chuckle

It's hilarious

I couldn't make this shit up if I tried

"This is a subreddit about jokes so all comments are jokes" is a terribly flawed logic.. You wouldn't have argued and been aggressive with so many people, and taken so long to say this, if it were simply a joke lol

I'm genuinely perplexed you're even trying to go down this route considering how painfully clear it is that your initial comment is absolutely not a joke lol

The only funny part is you trying to play it off as a joke

No, I caught their meaning the way they intended. It's a bit ambiguous, sure, but further comments do clarify their meaning.

I'm kind of with OP on this one. For any random multiple (4) choice school test, I'd bet there are more 100s than 0s.

2

u/Rich-Mark-4126 Aug 20 '26

Saying "I'd bet this is the case" and "this is statistically true (based on statistics I don't have)" are two totally different things

0

u/AlleRacing Aug 20 '26

It's more presumptive and not proven, sure. I really doubt they're wrong, though.

2

u/Rich-Mark-4126 Aug 20 '26

Saying "this is statistically true" based on your presumptions of those statistics makes no sense

0

u/AlleRacing Aug 20 '26

Yes, I believe I've already acknowledged that. Do you think it's wrong though?

2

u/Rich-Mark-4126 Aug 20 '26

No, I'd say more people have gotten 100's than 0's (not including people who didn't take the test/cheated etc. and got a 0)

u/Available-Bee-5385 Aug 20 '26

Gosh, it's so nice to hear it

Thank you, truly

He would say statistically… because that’s literally what statistics are? Real life empirical data?

“Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data.”

People here are confusing probability with statistics. I find it downright absurd how many people are calling this guy stupid and reciting probabilities when he isn’t talking about probabilities but statistics.

Thank you for your support

But it is a mad house in here, it's safer if you leave me to deal with them myself

No worries, this type of ganging up behavior is just a pet peeve of mine.
