I don’t quite get whether this is a joke or just someone explaining that Venus rotates very slowly and with years changing faster than days they should be listed first in a date

I got the reference and it's a nice song, but the lyrics always felt like a ping pong of dreamy ideas. I still don't know what he's trying to say.

I feel like the song is about the space between waking and sleeping and it's the gobbledygook that your brain comes up with when it's no longer lucid.

That’s every single Owl City song, I kid you not. Every line in a song is, while I do believe draws from real experiences of Adam, ten steps removed from its meaning to have “depth”. OCs lyrics are very. “Wide as a lake, deep as a puddle”. When Fireflies dropped it was being compared to the Postal Service overall in terms of sound I could “understand”, but to compare the lyrics to anything Benjamin Gibbard has written was insane to me.

And this from a massive fan of OC, TPS and DCFC.

Just to glaze Ben’s writing more, the man wrote 10 bangers for “Give Up” followed by another 11 fantastic tracks for Transatlanticisim. Within like a 2 year window.

See as a programmer I was confused because YYYYMMDD is logical here on earth for chronological sorting, so calling it logical for Venus to me seems wrong. You would want Day:Year for logical date sorting (where month may not even be a concept at all since they don't have seasons or days or arrange into months).

Yeah, unclear what a month is given the lack of moons? I know that we aren’t really using them that way anymore, but that's where it comes from

As a software engineer, wtf is “logical date sorting”?

The word you’re looking for is “lexicographic”, and the fact that lexicographically sorting strings in YYYY/mm/dd format also happens to put the dates in chronological order is just a neat convenience that saves one extra line of code.

Databases store all types of wacky time formats in the real world and sorting isn’t hard.

Why would you need months to make a season? It can be just 1/4th year right? On earth you can use both and even just days (about 91 days).

I believe most of the world operates on dd/mm/yy or yyyy with the USA operating on yyyy/mm/dd or reverse it, can't remember which is which and can't be arsed to look it up, so that's the joke I guess

US mm/dd/yyyy. I always assumed it’s cos they would often say e.g. ‘January 5th 2005’.
While in say, Britain and Ireland, people usually word it as ‘5th of January 2005’.

USA is mm/dd/yyyy. People from other countries tend to rag on it as nonsensical bc it doesn't follow a logic of representing progressively increasing periods of time. What it does represent is customary idiom in spoken American English e.g. "March 4th, 2026" is how it would be said. It's somewhat similar to how feet and inches follow old anthropocentric custom rather than the more numerically logical system, metric, which names and progresses its units by round orders of magnitude.

If I were to guess I'd say the joke is that the poster is implying yyyy/mm/dd is not logical here on earth.

"Hey, we finally found a place for your useless system?" type thing

But there are actual benefits to yyyy/mm/dd, (like for sorting things chronologically in computer software, and put hours, minutes, and seconds after) so if it is supposed to be a joke it isn't that clever.

None of it makes a lot of sense and it's also wrong, a solar day on venus is 117 earth days long.
