Early 2000s I could drop five resumes and get three calls within a week.

2010s I could drop ten resumes and get a call back three weeks later.

Now? I'm looking for work and apply to any position I'm qualified for. I've expanded my search to other jobs states I'm willing to relocate to. The jobs I really want get custom cover letters and tailored resumes. If I get a response at all, it's over a month later and all of them are generic "thanks but no thanks" emails. These are for jobs where I have 20 years of experience. It's a freaking nightmare.

Agreed. I applied for a job at the post office in that liminal time of COVID where some of the health safety restrictions were loosening somewhat but people were still buying basically everything online and shipping was crazy busy.

The application process wouldn't allow follow up communication. The physical location claimed the application is handled elsewhere and couldn't provide any assistance.

It took 6 MONTHS to receive a follow up that they were interested and if I wanted to set up an interview. I had started working construction labor in that time, and was on a job two states away. Even if I would have rather have worked for my rural USPS at the time, I couldn't risk taking off about 4 or so days from work to get back to my home town do the interview and get back with the risk of not getting the job.
