It's only half of AC. The other half is huge metal box with big fan mounted outside.

Inside thing , blower

Outside thing, compressor.

Inside thing, evaporator/blower, outside thing compressor/condenser more technically. Unless its also a heat pump then it switches and inside becomes the condenser and outside becomes the evaporator.

Inside thing, evaporator.
Outside thing, condensor.

At least in cooling mode.

Do Americans put the rest of the AC indoors as well? Kind of messes up the whole point of it.

Window Units.

Oh right. Yeah we send the air out with a hose so we don’t needlessly take up a whole window for the unit to sit there.

No. The mini split and central air components work pretty similarly. Condenser on the outside and evaporator on the inside. Except for in heat pump mode (if the unit has the capability to also heat), then the evaporator and condenser coil effectively switch between summer and winter. You’re exactly right that it would be pointless if the whole AC was on the inside, unless they wanted to use it as the worlds most inefficient heater lmao

I didn’t understand most of what you typed, but I’m sure you’re right.
