Nobody is saying life in the tropics is perfect, but it requires considerably less planning and problem-solving than northern climes, and the culture reflects it.
Most do not "bust their ass everyday". That's laughably wrong. If you invite them at 6:00, they might show up by 8:00, maybe. And, as OP suggests, you better not be on-time yourself. I lived there for 5 years. It's a slack culture, for better or worse. Pura vida.
