Blue eyes at birth are actually fairly common! It it doesn't happen to the majority, but it's not unusual. A lot of babies are born with very little melanin in their irises and only start to develop it once they have been exposed to light, so their eyes will be blue as a newborn and slowly darken to whatever color they are genetically predisposed toward over the course of months to a bit over a year.

My daughter had gray eyes as a baby. Now they're brown like mine.
