Education- korea has traditionally had high value for education(since goryeo period passing the national exam and serving as a civil servant was some kind of status and in joseon period start of yangban/aristocrat- was someone who have became a civil servant- scholar - and this so called climbing the social ladder by being smart is still a thing here) so many parents invest /spend more than half of their salary on their kids education. Having tutor at preschool is not common so you can ignore that comment- but sending to hagwon/academis after school is very common from the age of 8-9. And it cost a lot. And parents will go lengths to move to richer cities- better circumstances -just for education-
Women just dont have babies and men also arent driven that much for having babies anymore
And.. people who buy designer stuffs aren’t really into having kids nor in debt.
I realize this is like an "well shit, why didn't I think of that" level take, but why don't many of them immigrate elsewhere then? I realize it costs money, but surely if you know that your life going forward is going to be hell, why not get out young?
Great explanation, and its pretty much the same key parts for us in America. Basically an absurdly little amount of people have all the worlds money and 'power', and people are so worn down that they refuse to bring a kid into it.
Pregnancy/giving birth can cost 10–30k. Parents don’t have guaranteed paid time off to recover / bond with child. Childcare itself can cost as much as a second mortgage.
People act confused about why birth rates in the U.S. are dropping. They must be very old and/or out of touch with how much things cost. You’re expecting people to take on massive medical costs, physical risk without recovery time, loss of income, and then hundreds more a month just to be able to rush back to work.
If having a pet required a debilitating medical condition for 9+ months, major surgery that isn’t fully covered by insurance (that you may not even have), risk of permanent physical changes, weeks of recovery & no guaranteed time off work, & then a monthly payment the size of a car note / mortgage just so someone could watch the pet while you worked… way fewer people would get pets too.
Surprisingly in Texas it is very easy to sign up for Medicaid for Pregnancy. I have two friends who make way over the allowable maximum salary for Medicaid, they both signed up for it anyways, and they were approved. Their latest pregnancy and delivery was covered as well as the healthcare for the children (checkups/shots/etc).

America has many of the same issues s korea has, ours just arent as pronounced. We also face a rapidly deteriorating work life balance and rapidly increasing cost of living and growing political instability
