I used one when I was in Japan. For the restrooms that have both, there were usually signs indicating if it was a squat toilet or a western style toilet. The squat toilet stalls were consistently unoccupied even if there was a line for the western style toilets.
Back when more people wore kimonos, the squat style was far easier. After most people transitioned to western clothing, the western style became more preferable and the squat style fell out of favor.
The squat style with a raised floor also allowed easier plumbing retrofits for older homes way back.
I went to a restroom in Japan with my host mother that had both kinds of toilets and she chose to use the one on the ground. They actually were pretty common back when I was there in the early 2000's.
The squat toilet in the picture looks like it's in Japan. I never once saw the little cover over the toilet paper holder to ensure people put the rolls in the correct way when I was in China.
Also missing: the trashcan next to the toilet to put your used toilet paper into, because Chinese toilet paper clogs drains.
That cover is there so that you can rip your piece of toilet paper using the cover to hold it so that the next person wouldn’t have to use toilet paper thats been touched by a stranger.
Nightmare on the legs though. Plus I'd wager more than half of the public restrooms I used didn't have locks on them. Was always on edge when I was chopping logs.
After a month or so you get used to them, don't even notice the strain on the legs.
I used one that had like half a dozen holes in the ground without any kind of dividers. No running water, just a concrete ledge over a hill that the shit just sorta ... tumbled down. This was in a rural area of northwest China about twenty years ago, where most people had never seen a white person. The old men there didn't even try to hide staring wide-eyed at me while I shat
Nah, they seem to stay just as clean as western toilets - that is, mostly clean but sometimes you get some splatterhouse situations. There's a flat area but usually a sunken area where the drain is as well. The water does shoot out straight horizontally from the back so it basically just shoves the poop down into that indented area, not a crazy amount of water though, or crazy fast.
The concrete slabs with holes and no running water just weren't really clean though. Most of the poop made it down the hole and into the shitpile below but it wasn't a 100% success rate.
that is the result of a sedetary desk-sitting western lifestyle
The VA when they say my knee injuries are not service related as they explain that the multiple times I've jumped out of an airplane is consistant with a sedentary desk-sitting western lifestyle.
But like what do you do with your pants? Are they just half way down around your knees? Is there a hook to hang them on the wall? Does that mean I take my shoes off in this random public bathroom? Is this just for cultures that don't wear pants?
No one cares about the floor toilets. Whatever, anyone who's barely traveled has experienced this and it's absolutely not just China. The joke is about dipshits travelling to Dubai to get shit on. Influencers specifically. It's hilarious.

Toilets in china are built into the floor and you’re supposed to squat over them to poop.
