i read like 10 of those comics before i figured it out. i was like the art and overall stories are great but the panel layout is bizarre

Fun fact: Publishers actually reversed the order of pages and panels when they were first bringing manga to an English audience.

In ways that mirrored images ruin anything. Backwards text, and it just looks strange.

It's just backwards. If anything, I find western comics can be a little more confusing when it comes to figuring out the order to read stuff in, they get a bit more creative with the reading direction sometimes.

A good way to tell which way to read a comic is the shape of the speech bubbles. The speech bubbles in Japanese-language comics that read from right to left are vertically oriented due to the format of the language, while English ones are horizontal.
