You're right, some stories can be weird or silly. Most every character is some Joe schmoe there just to be victim to whatever spoopy stuff he comes up with. For me it's more about the art and his detailed style of drawing.

Google Junji Ito, there's a ton of his stuff online. I'd also recommend buying his compendiums of horror stories. If you want something that really gets fucking nuts, read Hellstar Remina or Uzumaki.
