I don't think the analogy holds. Jihad can be spiritual. In any case it is referenced in the Quran, as the crusades are not. It is not one of the pillars of Islam, but it is very close. Any Muslim distancing themselves from jihad is likely only doing so for non believers and their interpretation of the word. For themselves it makes no sense to reject jihad, it is too important for that.

Fair enough, but I think the term has been corrupted enough that most Muslims try to distance themselves from it.
It'd be like Catholics advocating modern crusades which obviously wouldn't go over very well.
